betty boop Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 well it seems was not imagining things ! there is indeed a 30 sec delay t boot up where a bit sluggish, cant close the tray etc, The 93 and 95 take about 30 seconds to boot up when you turn them on. They are specially programmed to open the tray early in that if you command that. But they can't respond to other commands, including Tray Close, until after the boot up cycle finishes. --Bob the encouraging news is the euro unit doesnt share this sluggishness I have a 95EU and never experienced that the tray couldn't close during boot up !I just did a little test: right after switching the unit on I can open and close the tray as often and as fast as I wish. The only difference with the US models is that the EU don't have any streaming applications (yet). So it seems these streaming apps are the culprits. I wish my Oppo will keep responding that way once (if) Oppo UK adds streaming apps. If not, I would really like an option to de-activate the loading of these apps (which I probably won't use anyway). I can imagine it is frustrating that the trays opens but doesn't close immediately. It's guess there is also a risk of collecting dust on the laser ? so never know maybe something oppo might enhance on the player and will only be for the better watched a couple of movies today, red baron and partly through patton both in PQ through the oppo 95 are nothing short of stunning !

betty boop Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Might be worth asking Oppo support for a menu option to disable streaming if it will make the player more responsive. have done so. they have confirmed the euro players have option disabled and hence no 30 sec delay on startup with those. with the us players they are hesitant giving the option to disable as some people would think the player is then defective if when they try to use it and it doesnt work it is a us player after all so we have to live with what they decide best for that market it would be nice though to have it on as factory default, and give owners the option to switch off if they see fit. personally a 30sec period of sluggishness is a bit odd to impair the player with, given its disc player first rather than hobble it due to other functionality. in anycase they have taken on my suggestions including those made earlier, they are very prompt in response
betty boop Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 watched 3 movies in last few days, red baron, patton and the american and been astounded at the beautiful Pq and plenty of thrills with the audio quality as well. the oppo presented these splendidly doing a wonderful job on the movies
dea Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 This may be a dumb question but the latest official firmware supposedly allows the dedicated stereo outputs of the BDP95 to be assigned as the front left and right of a multichannel system system, so that the better DACS can be utilised. However, I can't find how to try this. Obviously I've missed something somewhere can anyone help?

This suggests to me that it is selectable option but I can't find any way to do this. I note that HomerJ suggests this is the default mode but even this is indicative of some means of changing the setting. All this is no big deal of course, I am just curious.

Want to be carefull you don't get or cater for level imbalance due to front left right being balanced connection vs other channels unbalanced.

Had a look at the menu dea its certainly not the default ; its under audio processing > stereo signal > choice of down mixed stereo or fl/fr . Mayby try the normal 7.1 config 1st as the double stacked dacs may not have much difference

Stereo Signal: To select the audio source that will be processed and sent out through the STEREO AUDIO OUT and the XLR BALANCED STEREO AUDIO OUT terminals. The available options are: • Down-mixed Stereo – The stereo or down-mixed stereo signals are processed and sent out from the dedicated stereo output terminals. • Front Left/Right – The original Front Left (FL) and Front Right (FR) signals are sent out from the dedicated stereo output terminals. The purpose is to fully utilize the better DAC hardware originally assigned to the dedicated stereo outputs for customers who prefer multi-channel speakers and do not need the dedicated stereo output or zone 2 output. When this option is selected, the dedicated stereo output ports should be used as the Front outputs of the 7.1ch / 5.1ch / Stereo Audio group. The original FL/FR RCA connectors should not be connected.

A new feature like this naturally wont be in the manual many of us have ; good for oppo to make revisions

betty boop Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 well my 95 hung on max payne (aussie edition). this was in loading. selected Play from the pop up menu and it just froze. neither eject or any button would work. had to hit the power button that didnt work. held down the power button eventually it shut down. when booted up again it played the disc no probs. dont know whats goign on there ! ps the fan on the 95 is indeed audible. my room is pretty quiet and can hear it. switch the oppo off and the fan noise goes away. its along the lines of the denon 4010 I had perhaps a tad louder than that. room temp was 20 deg c so not hot ambient. so for what ever reason it appears the oppo does use its fan. not distracting and will need a quiet room to hear it but its there. I've never heard a fan on the sony 5000es to give some perspective.
scanspeak1503560484 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 The beta firmware upgrade released 10th June (as mentioned by CWT) apparently improves disc playback. It does not bother the standard or pro multi-region chips.
SimonNo10 Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 (edited) switch the oppo off and the fan noise goes away. That would be because you have turned the unit off so it's not getting power (other than standby), that's pretty standard . I've heard the fan only when I've gone right up to it otherwise I don't hear it from my main listening position (approx 3m away). My unit has been rock solid since I got it back and had it on for over 2hrs tonight and the fan didn't come on. Edited June 11, 2011 by SimonNo10

dea Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 Got a problem with the BDP 95. Will not respond to the remote or to the front touch buttons. Only on/off and open/close on the front panel works. Tried recycling the power several times and changed batteries in the remote just in case they were the problem but to no effect. The front touch buttons respond by brightening when touched but there is no response to the commands. The machine plays discs normally just doesn't respond to controls. Obviously need to talk to Ken of Merlin but of course its a long weekend. Looks like a return job but any ideas would be welcomed.

dea Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 (edited) Check your multi-region chip installation especially if its the PRO version. Thanks for reply scanspeak. I thought this could be the problem and removed cover to check for obviously loose leads but virtually everything is obscured by the audio circuit board, only a couple of power supply connectors are readily accessible and these are not the problem so not sure how to proceed. The mod is the pro version. Further to the above, found installation instructions for the mod board on the Danish suppliers web site so decided to"bite the bullitt" and disconnect and reconnect the cables. This has fixed the problem though the 'most loose' cable was the flat cable connecting the audio board but don't know if this was the cause of the problem. Anyhow all good again (hopefully for sometime!). Thanks again to scanspeak for the inspiration! Further again to the above, I have to say I was underwhelmed by the quality of the flat cable multiconnectors used in the oppo. I realise oppo is not alone in using these strip connectors and its the way most stuff is built these days but they really are flimsy and, in the absence of a soldered connection must be prone to poor connectivity through corrosion, flexing etc, Also I don't think they would stand up too well to multiple reconnections. Hopefully only control signals and not audio or video pass through these things. OK rant over, just wondered if anyone else had any thoughts on this. Edited June 11, 2011 by dea
SimonNo10 Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 (edited) It looks like its a multispeed fan Simon and the ventilation is an obvious factor here Thanks for the links but I had already read the AVS ones as I'm a member and have been following the Official Oppo-95 one. What I was interested in with Al's post was the fan turned off after he turned the player off, which I thought would always be the case unless it was structured like a Projector fan where it stays on for say 1min during the cool down period. Is this the same for the 95? I'm just glad I don't hear the fan at my listening position. It's certainly not a deal breaker for me personally. Will be interesting if Oppo listen to the feedback and introduce either a replacement fan (that's quieter) or a fan controller as mentioned in the 3rd link you provided. So far for me the player is excellent and will be loading the new beta firmware today and see how it goes. On a side note I have noticed one button that wont work on my Harmony One after loading the BDP-95 from Logitechs site and that's the main Menu button. I have to click devices and select the Oppo (Dvd symbol) and then it works to get the pop up menu to select scenes while watching. Anyone that has loaded the Oppo-93/95 to their Harmony does this happen? Edited June 12, 2011 by SimonNo10

I have to click devices and select the Oppo (Dvd symbol) and then it works to get the pop up menu to select scenes while watching. Anyone that has loaded the Oppo-93/95 to their Harmony does this happen? hi simon, some players eg the denon 4010, can maintain fan on even going on standby (something user controllable by power save options). that the fan switched off on the oppo on standby indicated this not the case here, and also that to me the fan noise indeed coming from the oppo. which is important to me to identify as have other fans in the system, noctua for general cooling and the tivo has a fan as well. but yeah the fan definitely audible close to the oppo. and 3.3m away at seated position can just hear it as well but have to be looking for what you want to hear. certainly with movies going its not something audible. Switching on this morning with player cold and cant hear the fan or anything from the oppo at listening posn. but get close to the player and can hear what sound like general operational noise. which I think suggests the fan definitely is multi speed. and when audible yesterday perhaps the oppo in full flight warmed up a lot more than cold this morning. not a huge deal breaker for me. just more a point of note. where never heard a fan of the sony 5000es, the oppo just a tad louder than the denon 4010 owned earlier. I do agree an opportunity for oppo to introduce a quieter running fan. the noctua unit I use in the system is damn silent. not sure why OEMs dont use these kind of fans more often. like the rotel power supply used this time around, a noctua fan perhaps something to do with next model release ps re menu button , can you clarify whether this is with disc in or not, whether disc is playing or not. can check on my system. I have a couple of menu buttons a top menu or pop up menu buttons that came through with oppo 93 settings have uploaded on harmony 1100i. might be different to your harmony one in any case as good chance uses a different data base.
SimonNo10 Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 ps re menu button , can you clarify whether this is with disc in or not, whether disc is playing or not. My previous post: I have to click devices and select the Oppo (Dvd symbol) and then it works to get the pop up menu to select scenes while watching. So yes while disc is in.
