Would they have like John Mayer albums on LP?

Yep ! I know you can get Battle Studies on vinyl, and imagine it'll sound pretty good too. I've looked at buying it in the past.

So... what's your next excuse Dan ? :P

Edit: here ya go Dan http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&keywor...7011&page=1

They do pop up on Oz Ebay too. Try Vinyl Cafe and Vinyl Eye from memory...

Thanks mate.

My next excuse is that I do not have an LP record for auditioning purposes.

I do not know anything about LP Players, to be honest. I don't understand what the differences are between Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC), etc.

Don't be such a wuss Dan... go demo a few TT's :P

Best buy yourself a favourite album on vinyl first though... gotta have some demo material.

At the end of the day if you don't buy a TT you can always frame the record and cover, hang it on your wall and think of all that your missing out on...

demo ? what as in audition ? in person. what sort of fool suggetion is that ?:D

you know its upto you to prove to Dan he needs to get a TT, and no reason for him to go check anything out in person. that is upto "other people" :PB)

Do you have any double blind abx testing to suggest a TT for him ? otherwise I am afraid you will be required to do a "dump" and submit a specimen from it for analysis. this is all Dan requires to make a judgement and from the luxury of behind his computer screen. Once he passes a double blind ABX on the matter he can quite simply run out and buy the first TT he lays eyes on or even better, dont head out the house, just do a search on google and hit buy on the one that comes up with the most hits on google, or most stars in reviews. such is how its done dont you know. did you learn nothing from the last 3 cable threads ...you will have dan on your concious if you lead him astray !

in all seriousness Dan go get out for a listen. be LP shops in your neck of the woods no doubt ? otherwise am sure people can suggest one be it LPS or place to experience. or alternatively can also head off to a friendly forum member's who am sure be quite happy to lead you astray

Yep, methinks there's going to be a post that begins "Got the new TT today..." :P:

Sorry Dan!

 cheeky ! :D but somehow your guess not far off ! hehe

Go register at Stereo.net and check out the TT forum. There's quite a few Adelaide  Perth folk on there and i'm sure one of them would be more than happy to have you over for a listen and some pointers...

Running out of excuses yet ? :P

PM me if you get serious and i'll put you in touch with someone that i'm pretty sure will look after you for a demo.

I am sure that a couple of the Hi Fi stores here do sell LP Players, but in relation to having LP Players set up for proper auditioning, I shall probably have to ring them up to ensure that they have got them set up, and also to check if they have got any LP records to play.

If for nothing else, I would be keen to have a listen to how good vinyl can sound. :D

Yeah, Mark is deffinitely into his vinyl. Helped me out quite a bit when i had my pro-ject. He's been a bit quiet around here lately, but i'm pretty sure he'll reply to a PM :winky:

Hi Mark *wavey* :P

I just acquired a Pioneer Rhondo 3000 LP player from the old's - what are these like? Are they any good? The sounds seems ok to my ears :)

Thanks guys. I shall check out Simply Hi Fi and Sound Advice when I get a chance; possibly this weekend. See if I can find out what the big deal is with vinyl. :P

LoL!

Welcome mate, won't be long now :P

I don't really know the difference with MC and MM's either, I just know that one has bugger all voltage and one has a lot!

You WILL be surprised about how good it sounds. I had a good base of LP's to begin with, my Mrs had some and Dad had a stack too.

Pop (Pun intended) down to a Dixons or equivalent and pickup something. Or else SNA sell records in their Classifieds section every now and then.

I took all y'all's advice btw, my local shop is looking at my cartridge and will let me know if it's faulty or not before I send it off, the general consensus is it's unlikely to be the cart, they make them pretty good ;)

Will keep you informed.

Apollo will be in my hands in about 10 days :D

Unfortunately, I have never had LP's (I was born in the early 1980's and really only ever listened to cassette tapes and then CD's) and my Dad has never had any sort of LP collection, so I have never been exposed to the vinyl sound. There are certainly some very nice-looking LP Players out there.

Let us know what you think about your Rega Apollo CD Player when it arrives. I have listened to a model either one or two models up from it and was extremely impressed with it.

Thanks mate. It certainly looks the part, and would keep it all within the Marantz family. :D

It appears as though this TurnTable has been around for a few years now. Is it still very good for its price now in 2011?

Dan, the Marantz is a re-badged Clearaudio Emotion with a feet and cart upgrade. The Emotion is a current model, what i owned about 12 months ago and a table i was VERY happy with. So much so that when i decided to build my own taurntable i sort of designed it around the Emotion's big brother, the Clearaudio Champion(both can be found in my thread in the attachents forum).

You'll find it's a very natural sounding table IMO, not overly warm/smooth like some tables, but still not harsh or bright sounding. It's quite dynamic IMO thanks very much to the acrylic platter.

It has a good arm, and the Clearaudio carts really are fine MM carts IMO.

It was however very sensetive to what it sat on. Sitting on a granite slab it was dead and lifeless. However sitting on a 12mm acrylic sheet on top of 4 vibrapods, it really came to life.

For anyone looking at a new TT in that sort of budget i'd highly recommend and audition.

Thanks.

MM would make sense too Dan as the phono stage built in your integrated probably do just fine with a TT of this type :)

Hi Al,

I believe that the Phono stage on my Marantz PM-KI Pearl is both MM and MC compatible. Not that I understand what the difference(s) is/are.

Hi Al,

Dan, a MM phono stage is needed if your turntable has a moving magnet cartridge(moving magnet - the magnet moves within a coil to generate a signal in the cartridge). These phono stages are usually easily built into amps like yours as the signal level from the cartridge is comparatively pretty high (ie they are high output) and not much amplification is required in the pre amp stage.

A MC phono stage is needed where a moving coil cartridge is used on your turntable(moving coil as in this case the magnet is stationary and a coil moves to generate a signal). Moving coil cartridge output is comparatively very small and phono stages for these are for that reason harder to build into integrated amps and pre amps.

this is not to say the quality of the MC stage in your integrated would be rubbish. not the case, I used the MC stage in my own pre amp for quite a while, when ran a mid range ortofon cart and did a very good job, moving up in moving coil cartridge though easily got significant gains with a outboard MC phono stage.

That makes sense; thanks Al.

By the way, I 'resurrected' your Focal Diva thread which you started back in 2007 (I think) - in the Forums section. Just a cheeky comment there, wondering if you are tempted to upgrade to one of the latest Utopia III models.

Dan.
