DarrenW Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Some old people with young souls love spinning black vinyl as well
Drizt Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 It will be interesting to see if vinyl uptake continues to increase its market share or if the novelty will wear off. I can not see it dislodging digital, that is never ever going to happen but it may increase from its niche status. Interesting times none the less.
betty boop Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Some old people with young souls love spinning black vinyl as well haha, the amount of fantastic titles therye releasing on vinyl is really driving the uptake I think.
DenonCi Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I have never got into LP Never like the sound. but I got into SACD when I was 13 so am use to that sort of Quality. But there a bigger selection of music on LP.
gone_bush Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Some old people with young souls love spinning black vinyl as well What's with this "old" cr@p? I prefer to think of myself as "more experienced". OK, "very experienced" - but not "old"!

myrantz Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Anybody watched the Simpsons last night? The one with Cheech and Chong? Where homer played a record to Lisa and Bart in the attic? I'm trying to find a clip of it but my googlefu isn't good enough...
Gutty Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Some old people with young souls love spinning black vinyl as well What about us young people with even younger souls ?? I always feel left out... It will be interesting to see if vinyl uptake continues to increase its market share or if the novelty will wear off. I can not see it dislodging digital, that is never ever going to happen but it may increase from its niche status. Interesting times none the less. Nope, never going to dislodge digital Drizzle, and to be honest, doubt it will ever increase from it's niche status either. If ever that was going to happen it was a decade ago when DJ's still spun vinyl. These days even they mix direct from MP3 or CD. I knew so many guys that had mixing decks, would take them to parties and spend the night mixing all sorts of crap stuff, but when they weren't listening to electronica, they just played CDs. As much as they might have like it, none of them had any grunge/metal/punk on vinyl I could see it getting more popular if any of the record or CE companies pushed it, but it'll never have more than a few percent market share. Everyone's all about convenience these days, even some of us vinyl lovers are guilty of that. 95% of music i play is streamed or CD, but i do still love that other 5% so very much...
kaanage Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 (edited) Technically, CDs should sound better than vinyl but the following articles show why they almost always don't. The processes used to screw up CD masters just won't work with vinyl so the limitations of the old medium helps preserve the recording quality from the nobs twiddling the knobs. The Death of Dynamic Range What Happened to Dynamic Range Dynamic Range FAQ And a great related article on what happens to these recordings when the radio stations get hold of them Radio Ready: The Truth Edited April 2, 2011 by kaanage

Yeah radio has lot to answer for I too agree. Mixes being screwed so sounds good ie loud on peoples systems ie car radios with limited dynamic range. Will only ever be background music for me. It still amazes me how amazing records can sound no matter some 40 -50 years old. I particularly love lot of old stuff on vinyl. Especially since lot prob not even available on any other media form. My wife also big fan of vinyl. Likes when put records on. Ps great to see you around. what are you listening to these days
Tapet Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 Have the odd vinyl night here and a lot of fun. Interesting reading in that article. I have some CD's from very early days of CD and most of them sound better than just about all current day stuff. All these years latter you would think it would be the other way around.
kaanage Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 (edited) Ps great to see you around. what are you listening to these days Thanks Al. Music wise? Lots of jazz, some pop and a bit of old time rock 'n roll. Format wise? Mostly CD at home and AAC from a usb stick in the car. System wise? Home system hasn't changed much except that Rick FINALLY finished my Neptunes !!!!! Being the local Equinox agent, I'm not totally impartial but I can't fault these even in my less than optimal room. Of course, I'd been badgering him to build me this model ever since I heard the Jupiter.... The dynamic compression thing really pisses me off. One of my friends has been sampling from hybrid SACDs and has often found the PCM tracks to be heavily compressed vs the DSD ones. He has even reburnt a sampled DSD track on to a CD-R and found that when played on his system, he cannot readily distinguish between this and the DSD track while the difference between the DSD track and the original PCM track was obvious. No wonder so many people deride 44.1kHz PCM - the stupid recording companies are dumbing down the format for the sake of 20 second music samples at stores. Edited April 6, 2011 by kaanage

Very nice. I had always wondered why there was that hole in his line up. I think the Neptunes are the pick of the bunch, the sweet spot so to speak. Any chance of some high quality pictures of them in situ ?
