pgdownload Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I'd have thought that the twitter feed (and perhaps the program, too) would at least be on a short delay, like "live" talkback radio is. The onscreen twitter feed is really not twitter, just someone cherry picking out a few comments. So yes delayed and censored. I don't use twitter, but my impression is that its close to instant from the moment you make a comment to when it appears to others (maybe a few seconds for the message to be sent) And yes Baird, it does make me wonder how much someone can absorb of what is being said when you're constantly scanning the twitter stream. Regards Peter Gillespie
Wing Nut Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Funny, AdBlockPlus decided the entire Gadget Guy website was an ad and blocked everything Excellent - a browser add-on that really is quite smart

djOS Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) Maybe this behaviour is extreme? What about you?John not extreme at all mate, we have 2 TiVo's* and do exactly the same thing - I even wait at least 1/2 an hour before starting to watch my favorite motor sports broadcasts so I can FF thru the ad's! *so far 1 has been upgraded to 1TB. before the TiVo's it was a quad tuner media center with 2 360's and before that a pair of Toppy's. djOS Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) I suspect you'll find it only has 2 tuners. Can you record channel 7 and channel 9 and watch channel 10 live?Regards Peter Gillespie I work for one of the ISP's (not iinet) who is trialling FetchTV and it has 3 FTA tuners - i dont think very much of it as an FTA PVR and have removed it from my HT. Al Leece Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 I'm with most on here who record and watch everything. The last time I used the TV tuner was to tune in C11 and put it on the favourites list... :-) I have a Beyonwiz DP-P1 that looks after recording the commercial channels via IceTV - easy-peasy (although I have had a couple of minor glitches with it at times). The wiz records from T-5 through to Tend+30, since the commercial channels never worry about their scheduled start and end times... I also have a Toppy 5000MP which takes care of the ABC & SBS shows (so it still sees plenty of action) plus odd commercial programmes that the Wiz cannot cope with. We record and watch or use chase-play; so rarely do we see live TV that rellies talking favourite ad's may as well be talking in Swahili... Odd, though, that you think ABC is bad for scheduling, John (Tassie Devil). I find they and SBS are by far the most accurate start and end times; the commercial channels' schedules are largely a joke (although they have improved a little since they each have three channels to look after now - too much hassle to cause over-runs on all of them, possibly). The only thing I find annoying about ABC now is the amount of self-advertising between programs (all right I can use the PVR on that) and the annoying little pop-up display telling me what's next at the end of each programme... There is no known antidote to that... yet.... But ABC shows a lot of good stuff (I'd say it is better than the BBC in the UK, frankly, so well worth its money). As an aside, my better half has a penchent for The Amazing (AnybodyWatchesThis) Race. Last Sunday evening at 18.30, she claims it was supposed to be broadcast but the Wiz did not pick it up. Looked on the schedule and it is only scheduled for the reapeat showing next Sunday morning at 10.00. There is also no show scheduled for 18.30 later on that day. Has the scheduling changed at all, does anyone know? Is it IceTV that has got it wrong or C7? Just curious in case anyone else had the same problem. Cheers, Al.
BamBBBam Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 Can't find the link atm but I read about a survey, and they found that people much preferred getting TV (even through timeshifted PVRs) over just torrents/dvds alone.. it became a chore to have to think about what to watch every night. Recording space is ultra cheap these days so your method is a good one.

Is this the article you're refering too? Get with the program: old-style television gives digital the finger
GregA1503560021 Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) I suspect you'll find it only has 2 tuners. Can you record channel 7 and channel 9 and watch channel 10 live? Yes absolutely. They wanted to make sure you could always watch any FTA TV channel (including pause-live-TV), while still recording any 2 other FTAs. Personally I'd rather use all 3 tuners to record, or at least use the 3rd tuner "when available" to supplement the others when busy. I work for one of the ISP's (not iinet) who is trialling FetchTV and it has 3 FTA tuners - i dont think very much of it as an FTA PVR and have removed it from my HT. Is that since the latest firmware update? They switched over to webkit and everything performs much more smoothly. I'm interested in why you don't like it as a FTA PVR. Edited April 13, 2011 by GregA

Also while I was happy with the Movie service's PQ I was less than impressed with the stereo sound that came with all but a couple of the "HD" PPV movies. Edited April 13, 2011 by dJOS

Agree the SBS is usually reliable and the ABC has been better lately. I use EPG on a satellite PVR for the ABC & SBS (channels which cater for 90% of our entertainment) so I'm aware of any time inconsistencies. The Toppy 7100 is used for the commercial stations and I allow a VERY wide margin with manual timer settings (+ manual title entries) with them. My wife recoils in horror when she sees over 3 hours for a recorded movie of 1.75 hours so I have to remind her of ads & poor timings. Even then it sometimes looks like we might have missed the end so the 1200X FF on the Toppy is used to check if it is actually all there - a nice & useful Toppy feature. As for tuners, I can see where a 3 tuner PVR could be useful but I would prefer to have two twin tuner units - which is all we need here. We do have quite a few LDs, DVDs & Blu Rays not seen yet and prefer the TV programs. Maybe something more social about TV compared to discs which are more sterile and impersonal. Interesting idea I'd not thought about before. John
