I think you will find that often is Australian - but not always.

 

As far as I am concerned the service you get in stores like Myers etc here is abysmal.   The service in bookstores is worse.  I went in to get a specific book and then noticed it was part of a series so said - can you get the rest of the series please.   No problem.  Got home and found it was from another series.   From that point on I only get books from Amazon.

 

They jumped up and down about the under $1000.00 you pay no GST on goods bought overseas so it eventually was done away with - even though collecting it costs more than the amount you collect - which is why it was that way in the first place.   So we are paying already in our taxes for preferential Australian treatment.

I think it is way too early to make a call on whether Amazon is a success or not. They launched now to take advantage of the December shopping spree. Amazon claimed that the AU launch was bigger in number of items than UK, Canada, but online shopping was smaller market then.

 

Let's see in 6 month's time whether it continues to underwhelm...

Probably because they are an outgoing product by the major manufactures, we tried to get a replacement panasonic commercial TV for our club and was told that Panasonic don't make them anymore so we had to buy the last 4 that were in stock for $4000 each. Benq are selling them for a quarter of the price.

Looks like Amazon is just a Greys online without the bidding.

I don't understand Amazons thinking on this release..

Here it is just before xmas when people are buying anything and everything for anyone and everyone..and they have a VERY limited range of a few things.!!.

Logically..wouldn't you think that they would make sure they had everything under the sun available for xmas shoppers and promote an enthusiastic response from the Australian public!!

Looking around there it looks like what see in some super market from east Germany or soviet era ussr. Ie few and far between anything in there. Lot of empty shelf’s and what there is ridiculously priced eg 2 eggs at $2 each or something

So im assuming people are aware of the way the the Amazon pricing algorithm works. It hunts the best prices online from other retailers and then applies a discount. Its going to take awhile for it to comb through the Australian online space and set prices accordingly. 

 

At the moment its a few opportunistic ebay retailers setting up the Amazon shop. Once the brands on sale have been threatened by the existing channels, expect the prices or products to disappear from the listings. Those small ebay/Amazon sellers have gone under the radar so far, but now that the retail giants are hunting through Amazon and chasing their suppliers, those little online shops will be starved of product or priced out.

I think that since the launch on Tuesday, Amazon have increased the number of categories and items. I suspect that once they have enough products and fulfilment centres, they will start providing prices that we are all expecting/hoping? 

 

While we quibble about what they are offering on DAY 4 (!), Amazon can afford many more months to fine tune their offerings.

If Amazon become as successful here as elsewhere (likely) it will surely mean even more money going offshore... I love a discount, but unless it is substantial (like an $25 movie for $8) I think I will be trying to keep money in the country.

 

I'm a bit of two minds about this now... and agree that it's very early days here.

My order from 9am yesterday arrived 2pm today.   Aus Post parcel.

 

I am only 35km from the warehouse,   but then again the records I ordered from JB on tuesday also arrived today and I'm only 15km from where they shipped from.

Yes makes sense ; stock that's surplus they can access and isn't tied up as contracted to the likes of JB Etc ; Kogan 'LG and Samsung isn't a wide diversity and theres a lot of brand names in other departments Ive never heard off 

 

If Amazon opens the cheque book to the major providores things may change   Also noticed theres no grocery department yet ; very early days for supply contracts .. They need more warehouses

I noticed that some prices on the site are starting to drop. In books there are a couple of titles - the latest Dan Brown and Lee Child ones are about $10.00 each cheaper than Dymocks. However you do have to factor in the high postage rate of $10.00 per parcel on top of that.

Even if Amazon start at a loss here, they will stick it out until they wring every last drop from the economy.

 

I love a good bargain... I just hope they don't "take over" here.

When was the exemption on no GST under 1K abolished? AFAIK no such thing has occured.

As I said there is currently no GST applicable on imported items under $1000. As your link says it will commence in July 2018(subject to legislation)

I hope that Amazon Australia gets it act together because thus far it has been a fizzer.

I was looking at a watch and on the local Amazon it was $139 AUD. Amazon in the US was $36 USD.(about 47 AUD)

Lets get the wording exact so their is no confusion:

GST on low-value imported goods. This low value import tax (LVIT) is GST on imported worth less than $1,000. As of 1 July 2017 this applies to products sold by Australian retailers. For overseas retailers, the start date has been pushed back to 1 July 2018, subject to legislation.
