bsaac Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Hi guys After the quality advice I got in my previous CIH thread I thought I'd ask for some more! Being new to the projector concept I wanted to be some idea of how much difference a more expensive screen makes to the resulting picture For example looking at Selby's site they have screening ranging in price from about $600 to two or three time that amount. Depending on the final dimensions the architect comes back with and assuming I go with a CIH setup I will probably be looking at a 140 inch screen and the only one listed on the Selby site is about $1700 Are there cheaper options and are they going to provide appropriate levels of picture quality etc? Educate me please
bbar Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Not sure you can get a $600 140" scope screen and to go that size you would need a high gain screen and the lower cost screens are all 1.0 gain
bsaac Posted May 23, 2012 Author Posted May 23, 2012 No your quite right the cheaper screens I was referring to were 16:9 but there is still quite a range in pricing between same sized 16:9 screens and I guess I was trying to get an idea what you get when you buy the more expensive screen? Also is there a reason scope screens are so much more expensive?
oztheatre Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 They are priced relative to the materials used for the most part. Scope screens are generally wider or longer and use more materials so cost more to manufacture.
Owen Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 More expensive screens tend to have better colour accuracy, a smoother screen surface and offer gains greater than 1. A smooth screen surface is important if you sit relatively close to the screen (under 4 metres) and gains greater than one are often requires for large screens depending on the projector used. For pull down or motorized screens there is also the issue of screen curl. One would expect the better screens would be flatter and stay flatter over time. There are tab tensioned retractable screens that pretty much eliminate curl and flatness issues but these are not cheap. For good quality screens from reputable manufacturers there is typically little if any difference in cost between scope and 16:9 screens, you are paying for the materials so the screen with the largest area costs the most.
