Tweet Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 (edited) I don't know if this has been posted before but here's a possible development in presenting CinemaScope movies at full 1080p x 2560 on Blu-ray disc for forth coming 21: 9 screens. To quote: Folded Space Announces Blu-ray Disc® Encoding Technology Providing up to 50% Greater Performance for Movies with Panoramic Aspect Ratios. http://www.prweb.com...rweb9512515.htm http://www.highdefdigest.com/blog/folded-space/ P.S Sorry about the mis-spelling of 'CinemaScope' in this Heading of the post .... an unfortunate typing error. David Williams Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 We really need another bluray format don't we.
cwt Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Thanks for posting this C.M. ;at last bluray catches up to dvd's anamorphic capability Makes going cih cheaper without the a lens too. I wonder if this is compatible with 24p frame packed 3d Good thing this is all backwards compatible so its good future proofing. Fingers crossed an oppo 93/95 can be firmware modded for these aspect ratio's If any can oppo's would be a good bet with its stretching capabilities ...Good reason to buy a 21:9 panel; see if a few more ce's make them.
Tweet Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 (edited) Most of us will need to buy a new 'enhanced' Blu-ray player I would think. At least this new upgrade will avoid any new format war. Actually, this particular enhancement will give the Blu-ray format the 'shot in the arm' it needs where 3D was simply 'ho-hum' in its appeal. With Blu-ray players as cheap as they are this firmware upgrade shouldn't add that much to their overall cost or the enhanced discs. The 21:9 panels might initially cost 50% more which is to be expected I suppose. Probably about 12 months away before we see 21:9 panels in the shops, though with the world economic situation in a slump things will have to improve somewhat, it usually does. MACCA350 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Sounds like they're overcomplicating things "Folded Space's software employs proprietary algorithms to generate and store additional resolution which is hidden within the black bars above and below the letterboxed image of the movie." Why on earth don't they just add 2560x1080 resolution to the spec. In fact why not add AR's like 1920x810 etc so there are no encoded black bars anymore. I mean if free software like VLC player can work out what to do with 1920x810 and other odd AR's surely it's not that hard. I really don't understand why they never went down that road. Looks like they were just lazy. Cheers
Tweet Posted June 27, 2012 Author Posted June 27, 2012 (edited) I would think it was a means of generating royalties from 'their' firmware innovation, also, it is a strategy in remarketing of the same products we've already bought but with 'the additional CinemaScope enhancements', something they could have provided us with in the first place, before 3D. Basically it will extend the life of the Blu-ray format, if it has wide adoption, while at the same time opening up the market for 21:9 displays. One might think of it as just a maketing tool that will work much better than 3D ever did. It has that potential. It will also be very interesting to see the first reviews for this software enhancement next year, if the Studios decide to go for it. C.M Edited June 27, 2012 by Tweet

C.M Certainly It gives an upgrade solution for upgrading both to true anamorphic and later on to ''upscaled'' 21:9 . If it was just true 2560x1080 ;that may not be compatible with the algorithm that gives anamorphic 1920x1080 as well [ considering the extra info is hidden in the black bars] Easier to market with 2 distinct options 1st quite reasonable step is a new 21.9 projector screen . This has the potential to forestall the 4k video push and be a lot better value ; thinking I dont sit close enough to need 4k anyway With Blu-ray players as cheap as they are this firmware upgrade shouldn't add that much to their overall cost or the enhanced discs The enhanced discs hopefully dont emulate 3d disc prices but sadly Ime not hopefull
