MrBurns84 Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 My trusty DS713+ is still kicking..been running 24/7 since 2013 on 2 WD Reds configured at Raid1. I did the Ram mod on the weekend and bumped it up to 4GB. Booted up and running like a dream. I was thinking of getting the DX513..but at this stage, its not needed yet..

I did a 16gig upgrade on my DS815+ ... it's the backup server with 8x8tb drives installed so the massive ram addition enables some impressive buffering and allows the main server to complete backups a lot more efficiently. https://miketabor.com/how-to-upgrade-synology-ds1815-16gb-ram/ Edited July 4, 2017 by Guest
Guest Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 Just found Synology have info here. Upgrade of memory for high end boxes, my DS414, not on list...

Putting the ram in was easy exactly like upgrading ram on a laptop. The hardest part was getting compatible ram but was easy enough once you knew the part number. I used Kingston. Oh and taking the NAS apart was fiddly but not impossible. Took me 20 mins to get it done.
rotur Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Greetings... Wasn't sure whether I needed to start a new topic or not but anyway... I have a QNAP HS251+ and have found the following after doing a software update to 4.3.4... I did a diagnostic volume check which still left the warning in place but not advising what the issue is... Top line says disk has failed in Raid...but I also get the following which is a bit confusing This says the disk is in good health I'm not very savvy with NAS details as such... Has anyone else had this happen? What does it actually mean and what action do I need to take given that I have already checked the volume?
hired goon Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Weird ... I got a "degraded volume" warning for my NAS today. Disk 3 is MIA, and Disk 1 is "failing". Backing up everything now just in case ... --Geoff
Guest rmpfyf Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 @rotur if it's a single-disk RAID it could have have just disconnected an reconnected. Happens. There'll be some function on or around the page you're on to check the drive's history... poke around. Something will have been momentarily out of whack.

Does this mean that the file system not being clean would also be as a result of not shutting down properly? The only change yesterday was a firmware upgrade...nothing else

kukynas Posted July 14, 2018 Posted July 14, 2018 it took little bit longer than originally expected but finally had a chance to grab one with all the goodies third disk arrived later today with SSD cache and extra memory I don't know if it's known fact that adding extra xTB of storage into SHR array takes 4-5 days of nonstop processing but I wasn't happy with such timing so here is some quick fix how to reduce it to half link: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=121532 command in SSH: root:~# echo 16384 >/sys/block/md2/md/stripe_cache_size I was able to process it under admin account so should be fine as well picture below showing jump in write speed from ~25MB to ~56MB (168.1MB for all 3 disks) per second
blakey72 Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 I'm finding I don't use mine a hell of a lot. I'm just streaming from Tidal and the quality seems to be comparable. Of course Tidal doesn't have the less popular titles.
kukynas Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 I'm experiencing vibration problems with my WD REDs, anyone else with similar/same problems? I didn't capture it during my installation process when my NAS was sitting on the desk but now when sitting on the plasterboard in ceiling it's very audible and whole plasterboard audibly resonate, I tried to install several layers of high density EVA underneath which helped but I can still hear the vibration/resonation , disks are otherwise in perfect conditions... Don't know what else to try...

Also try sitting everything on the ceiling battens rather than on the plaster is acting like a drum (have done similar with a 4 BAY NAS to good effect, too noisy to be in the room)

musicmc Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Try a pillow in a plastic bag for a start, couple of large towels, anything that is light weight and fluffy :) EU is a big place, surely they have low density foam, somewhere. 1
kukynas Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 seems like polyurethane (also used in pillows) could do the job, will check if I can get some ready made sheets... thanks again
musicmc Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 keep trying Brno !!! Yes the Dacron in a cheap pillow or soft toy would work, provided it doesn't interfere with the ventilation of the NAS
kukynas Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 below some progress, don't judge me on cutting job, I'm quite novice in this field first 3 layers (5cm each) improved resonances significantly but I could still hear some leftovers so another layer of different type of material finally suppressed sufficiently remaining resonances so (hopefully) job done, will see for how long
rotur Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Have been gifted a TS 251 QNAP with 2GB ram installed. Have reset the NAS to now have a blinking red and green power light. Has been this way for more than half an hour. There are no hard drives installed. I'm unable to get any identification from QFinder. Can someone please advise how I can sort this out? Thank you

It will probably start formatting the drive once you power it up, but that's just a guess https://download.qnap.com/Storage/TechnicalDocument/20160811-QNAP_Turbo_NAS_Hardware_Manual_EN.pdf
kukynas Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 @rotur you need to install at least 1 HDD, it won't work without HDD...
