I am finally considering an upgrade to my 7 year old ReadyNas Duo as it is limited to 2Tb drives.

I only need a 2 bay unit to store music and video, needs to be accessible via my network either ethernet (my preference) or wifi.

There seem so many out there and it is all a bit confusing, there seems to be so much more you can do with them.

I also have 3 Squeezebox devices that need to be able to access the files.

Any suggestions upt to say $350 without drives.

For $350ish, the Synology DS218play would be my pick.  https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/DS218play

Synology definitely the best overall choice.

QNAP also good some models more powerful and orientated more towards video streaming direct from the NAS.

but the QNAP Operating system lags Synology.

Mind if I hop in!?

I have been considering a NAS for a while.  Here's the current situation:

- initially I was gonna get a Synology so I could use Surveillance Station for a home security camera, however I ended up getting a dedicated NVR for those duties.

- I hope to eventually rip a big CD collection to FLAC.  I'll likely get a Bluesound node 2i for that duty, but it'd be nice to copy all the rips to backup storage, which could perhaps in-turn be accessed across our home network

- I have a drawer full of old Hard Drives from various computer changes over many years.  I hope to go through each and transfer all important stuff (esp photos) to a central location. I'd imagine I'd copy them (?RAID) to a second backup drive, and maybe once I'd sorted all the crap out, then upload to a cloud-based backup too)

- we watch streaming services, but I can't see us storing movies in the forseeable future

- I have an i7 NUC (plus memory ready to go) unused that could perform all sorts of duties, such as a Roon core.  Not sure whether to use or onsell....

- I have recently been given 2x4TB (1xWD blue and 1xSeagate NAS) 3.5" drives

Options:

- should I get a 2-4 bay NAS (had considered Synology 918+ for example)

- should I just get an external 2-bay enclosure for the drives and connect via USB to my router?

- other ides?

Whew!

I've just grabbed a 2-bay enclosure so I'll try the "drives before you buy" approach.  No too much to stuff up for $160 for a 2-bay RAID USB3.1 setup I can plug into my router....

Looks like I killed this thread dead last year!

So I'm thinking NAS again!  Goddam lockdowns.  Any more thoughts (see my previous thread(s).  Not much luck was to be had from a 2-bay enclosure.  Just doesn't play well with devices.  I'm just using them as an Apple backup for our laptops.

Thinking maybe the Synology DS920+?

I was thinking of buying one myself. I currently have a Synology DS218J 2 bay, that I just upgraded the drives in. I was trying to decide whether to buy the DS920+ or just increase the size of the drives in the 2 bay I already have.  But I got a couple of bad sectors on one of the 4TB drives in the 2 bay, and decided to replace the drives with 8TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro, in the interim. I might still go for the 4 bay Synology, because it gives you more flexibility with upgrading the drives. You can buy two of the biggest bang for buck size drives now, then later on, add two more biggest band for buck drives. Like if you buy two 8TB now, then by the time you need to go bigger you'll probably find that the 14TB is is good value for money, so just add two of them to the NAS. Or just add two more 8TB drives because they will be cheap by then.

And just as an indication, I have about 3500 CDs ripped to flac for about 1.6TB on the NAS. I have about the same in MP3 too, but much smaller footprint.

At the moment though, I'm trying to resuscitate a WD My Cloud 4TB. It has bad sectors, so I was going to replace the drive in that with the good WD Red 4TB from the Synology NAS. But it isn't simple, and I've spent about four full days trying to get it to work.

Righto.  I took the plunge and ended up with a Synology DS1520+.  It's all hooked up and working well so far!  I have 2 8TB ironwolf drives, set up in SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID).

First job is to work my way through dozens of old drives and computers lying about, and collate family photos into one place.  I'm just using the  Synology Photos app that came with the unit. So far so good.

QUESTION ABOUT MUSIC:

What is the best way to store a music library on the NAS?

- I have maybe 1 TB or so of music files.  I also plan at some stage to rip about 500CD's or more (I may just get a Bluesound Vault 2i at some stage to make this easy, else I'll never get around to it!!  I can then back that unit up to the NAS)

- I note the Synology had an app called "Audio Station", which I assume is their Music filing system.  I can't find much info on it.

- Should I set up a separate volume (say, 2TB) for music alone?

Cheers!  Mat

I just use the Media Server app, and don't bother with audio station.. I haven't actually found a use for Audio Station yet LOL. Nor Video Station or Photo Station..

Media Server does the serving, and allows you to view play media via the interface on your connected devices. Indexing is done by the Indexing Service.

I just store the music files in the shared music folder (same for videos), otherwise you have to set up passwords to be able to stream to other devices. You can still set up passwords if you want to, but you can also set up access only to allowed devices too, if you want to as well.

Edit: What was it that pushed you to the 1520+ over the 920+?

On a separate note, I finally got the old WD My Cloud operating with a new (second hand) 4TB HDD. Talk about a PITA though.

It was much more convoluted than it should be to fit a HDD to a "NAS" (for want of a better word).

Thanks mate.  I did a bunch more reading and the 1520 seemed to present better value for a little more in price I suppose!

I started uploading photos (1st main job before I get distracted by music!!) into "Synology Photos".  So far so good (although I had selected "skip duplicates" and still seem to be copping alot of copies!  This app seems to work pretty well, although one issue is trying to upload pics from old Macs in the house.  I have tried "export originals" to try to avoid changes made by Mac filing systems which may cause issues, but with varying success.  I'll keep plugging.

So Bob, did you try using "Audio Station" at all?  If so, what was the issue?

No, I haven't used it. I can't actually see a reason to use it. Same with photo station. For music, I only use the device app, or web based interface, to cue up music to play it. The music on my NAS is purely for storage and serving via "Synology Media Server" to connected devices, I don't need a "library" stored on the NAS.

I store my pics in a folder hierarchy that is eg. 2001/2001_01 , 2001/2001_02 etc. In those folders will also be sub folders like "herbert's wedding" etc. As for displaying photos, I just let the device I am using handle it their own way.. ie Browse folder then show pictures.

I have a Synology NAS DS1515+ that seems to have stopped, had it in storage for a year, took it out booted ok then I chose to upgrade to DSM 7 and the next day it had stopped.  Managed to get it working once again but stopped again.  I believe it has either the transistor issue or the other common issue with cpu that stops the main board from booting.  The lan switch still flashes if a cable is plugged in but no fans or disks

was thinking of offering it up for free anyone who wants to try resolving or using for parts, minus any disks

I still have a DSM918+ still in action

I don't know what the problem is, but if you don't need it, I'd be keen to have a go at repairing it.

Looks like the known transistor issue on the motherboard in the video, not the CPU issue fixed by the resistor also discussed.  If I short the transistor as per video then it boots.

The transistor seems to be BC847 Transistor which jaycar stocks for less than $1.  Also i heard battery can be replaced.

Not sure if i will give up/sell cheaply or try and get it fixed.

But apparently this issue is common across many of the Synology 2015 to 2018 range with Celeron chip, so some of you Synology owners may face these issues

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like a pretty simple repair if that is the problem. If you give it a go yourself, take care in the transistor replacement. Be a bugger if you damaged the board.

Hi all.  Some help if possible?  I have a new DS 1520+.  It's hooked up into the home network and working well.  Big job no.1 is to toil though loads of old drives/computers and upload all the photos.  I decided keep it as simple as possible, so to just use the "Synology Photos" app.  For now, I am just uploading to personal space>All photos.  I have uploaded many 1000's of photos with minimal issues, but...

The issue:

- uploading from Apple Laptops problematic.  Even worse, one is really old (a G4 Laptop).  I have it's photos on a spare disc or two so I don't necessarily need the laptop itself

- As I understand it, the Synology will not play nicely with attempts to upload a "library" from Apple devices, but rather I need to send the original photos (before they were catalogued into "photos" or other programs on the Apple device.

- I have tried highlighting all the photo files on my wife's MacBook Pro laptop (about 20,000 pics), going to file>export>export unmodified original....... but it comes up with "error 1".  My understanding is that this should export all the photos (say, to a temporary external drive) and remove all the "added Apple stuff".  Then I should be able to send the file (5000 at a time) to the Synology.

Any ideas why this won't work?  Any better ideas regarding getting my pics all in one place on the Synology Photos app?

Cheers!  Mat

I have found that the number of little external USB hard drives around my place is growing alarmingly.  I already have a NAS, but it is old (Thecus N2310) and only has 4GB storage.   The storage and speed are what has led to the proliferation of USB drives.

I am thinking I need to get a newer NAS before adding or buying more storage.   I haven't been keeping up with the latest trends in NAS stuff.   I would like to be able to at least also use the NAS as a media file server.

I can't justify spending too much, as it's mostly about convenience, not need :)    So what's popular?

Follow up question, how would building my own from, say, a raspberry Pi with USB3 to a drive enclosure, compare to a small real NAS product.

Yes, you can build something cheaper but nothing beats the convenience and ease of use of a Synology NAS (and I have an IT background,  built my  music streamer).

So Synology is still the go to brand ?     I need to start looking around.
