idiotek Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 After my little accident and now awaiting a new cartridge, I thought I would put up some pictures of my TT. My dark side journey started off with a Harksound HD210 TT that I unearthed from my parent's garage. Then the addiction took hold and I upgraded to the Rega P2. After tinkering with the Rega for a bit (which included having the tonearm rewired by Audio Origami), I chanced upon a decent looking TD 124 mk 1? (it had the heavier iron platter and the original motor) that I did not hesitate in acquiring and on sold the Rega turntable (without tonearm) to another local enthusiast. It was originally enclosed in a massive plywood plinth. In between moving house and selling my hi-fi gear, I contacted Vince from Once Analog to service the TD 124, as well as making a Corian plinth for it. Corian suited me just fine as it was important (for marital harmony) that the TT would not look out of place in our bedroom (where it is placed). The acrylic cover was custom made at KF Plastics in Sydney for less than $100 (turnaround was a reasonable 10 working days) So without another word, here are some pictures: I am quite happy with the current setup (along with the Lenehan ML1 speakers, ME 25 preamp and ME 550 power amp). I guess when the upgrade bug comes around, I would look at a new tonearm and cart combo, or perhaps a step-up transformer so I can use MC carts or if funds allow, a dedicated MC preamp.
xtrachewy Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Not many white plinths....looks very nice with the polished RB250.
jaspert Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Very nice and high WAF factor indeed. What cartridge are you going to use with it?:
Peter_F Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Hi idiotek, The whole thing looks great, and I like the corian plinth. May I ask waht the cost of the plinth was? Cheers, flemo.
idiotek Posted June 25, 2010 Author Posted June 25, 2010 jaspert: I asked in another thread and most responses suggest another Denon DL-110 or DL-160. I am curious to try something different though, so may want to try a Ortofon M20FL Super (do share your comments in the other thread in the Turntables section) flemo: It cost $1000 for material, workmanship and after pickup support. If you look at the cost of a slate plinth (I think it was approx. $1500 + shipping, if not more from overseas), then it is good value. Vince was also pretty cool to allow the cost to be paid in installments and I saved on shipping as I was able to pick the plinth up from Vince's workplace in Sydney. The Corian plinth is just as weighty as slate, so it is not something to drop on top of any body parts or be in a world of pain afterwards (this from personal experience) Sound quality-wise, my current setup is in a different world between my previous TTs. A combination of the TD 124, plinth and better speakers made my records sound like better pressings, even if they were less than great in the first place. For example, in one of the pictures, you may be able to pick out I was playing a local repress of Black Sabbath - Paranoid, which was inferior to the original Japanese pressing that I also have when played on my previous TTs. Now the gap is closer and pretty similar for casual listening.
tricka Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Lovely set up...I really like the white! Congratulations.
Grizzly Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 A very tasteful modernisation of a classic TT- you done good!!

Hi idiotek, no drama's here mate, many years ago I was a corian fabricator and was just curious what sort of outlay one would expect to pay for a "supply and manufactured" plinth. I know it was very a pricey product when I used to work with it so overall I think you did very well. Cheers, flemo.
metal beat Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Very very nice. Vintage tables are getting very popular!!
