Greener Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Hey guys.. Just wondering if anyone who has used the newish Vifa SuperTweeter (it's got the nipple:rolleyes: ) model XT25TG30-04 would care to share a comment or two about their impressions of its performance> ie does it live up to it's "on paper" claims of freq extension? Does a cymbal sound closer to the real thing? Or would the AU$72.00 (as I've been quoted) each be better spent on an alternative tweeter? I mean as in a similar or lower price point. Any comments are welcome. Cheers all:)
cheekyboy Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Hi Onions, what has lifted this tweeter to super status? I've used this tweeter in several builds over the past couple of years and I have big raps for it, but, what have they done to it that I don't know about:confused: Chees, Keith
Greener Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Hi Keith, you cheeky boy.. While researching on many websites I noted a couple of them referred to this as a "Super Tweeter" but I guess they meant it as maybe a "super buy" possibly due to its freq range to 40KHz or that it embodies the features of both a conventional tweetie as well as the performance qualities of an ordinarily extra cost/installation space requirements of a "Super Tweeter" per se... And bugger me if they didn't also elude to it as being a recent item !! Anyway Keith, so you recommend the unit then ....
Aslan Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Onions, this tweeter is as good as it gets for the $$$$................in fact it beats most tweeters costing twice as much. Go for it. I've used it for many years in many entry and mid level offerings.
Greener Posted June 28, 2010 Author Posted June 28, 2010 Thanks young Aslan... Very helpful post. Greatly appreciated. Cheers.. Laurie.
Mika75 Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 The off-axis response doesn't look very promising....how low do u need to X-Over ?
gainphile Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 The compromise of these tweeters are: - Requiring high xo point, although Fs is low - Poor off-axis response - If xo is passive, it requires impedance compensation circuit So it all depends on your speaker's goal and xo implementation.
cheekyboy Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 Yes Onions, it's certainly a super tweeter in that it punches way above it's price point....................definitely recommended! Cheers, Keith
Greener Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 Cheeky..Thanks for the recommendation, sounds pretty kewl then..but now as Mika and Gainphile have alerted me I need to consider the Xova aspect. Oh Poooh:confused:.....
Aslan Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Mika I need to crossover at 3KHz.... 3k at 12dB per octave or higher is fine Laurie. Dont forget to put an impedance correction filter on the mid/woofer to tame the high end spike in response
Mika75 Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Is it possible to give some more info on the other drivers/configuration ur thinking?
Greener Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 Aslan & Mika thanks for the input- enormously appreciated. I am attempting to refurbish JBL HLS 410's which had both tweeters removed as they had both failed. I do know the crossovers are 3KHz and I understand that they are at 12db. The woofer/mids are Vifa sourced item No 334565-001 with effective cone area I'd judge as 3 1/2 inches diam. The crossover in each includes a 10uf 50v and a 2.2 J 50v, along with two 5w 2 Ohm resistors per xover. I can put up a pic or two of the xovers on here tomorra for your advice if it would help. The cutout area on each enclosure is 72mm so that's also figured in a tweeter choice for my convenience..
Greener Posted June 29, 2010 Author Posted June 29, 2010 (edited) This is the schematic for the existing crossover in the HLS410, would appreciate advice re mod's required.. Edited June 30, 2010 by Onions
cjcc Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 This is used in the Jazzman i'm currently building. The crossover point is 3.2 k. There's a link to the design in my first post. The crossover schematic is split for each driver along with the slopes. PS 72 AUD each vs 36 USD each postage is not that much!!

Greener Posted July 1, 2010 Author Posted July 1, 2010 any thoughts from members as to changes to existing HLS 410 crossovers ? per schematic ?
Aslan Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Just wire it straight in Laurie. There may need to be some slight level adjustment after testing but it will be close.
jeffl Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 http://www.stereophile.com/standloudspeakers/1205lipinski/index.html is a guide to how the XT25 off axis performance can be improved .
Greener Posted July 2, 2010 Author Posted July 2, 2010 Aslan thank you so much mate. Jeffl I will take a look per your link. Thank you very much also.
kye Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 just ordered a pair of these to replace my tweeter array consisting of 1 x peerless silk dome (10+ years old) and 2 x jaycar ribbons (supertweeters) per side. will share my impressions when I get them installed and burnt in.
Mika75 Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 (edited) Is this the speaker ? http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Technical%20Sheet/HLS410%20ts.pdf Edited July 3, 2010 by Mika75
kye Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 my pair of these came today and i've hooked them up - a straight replacement for my previous peerless silk-dome tweeters (no crossover change required it seems). initial impressions are good - they're spacious, crystal clear (the peerless silk-domes rolled off above 10k and I had to augment them with a couple of ribbons per side crossed-over around 10k) and detailed. they make music (those three are the most important words in this whole post) and what's impressive is they did that from hour zero. as I write this they're getting a tweeters-only barrage (well, the kind of barrage that a 9W amp can give) and i'll go back and have another listen. things normally loosen up significantly after the first hour of high energy music at a decent volume. considering that new drivers normally sound slow, harsh, muffled, and have no sense of detail compared to when they're broken in, i'm expecting good things from these babies
