I borrowed Last Jedi in 4K from a guy at work to test on my Oppo 205 as it wont play on his Panasonic 4K player. I know this has been raised before but what is it with these latest Disney releases where the audio is sooo low? My normal listening volume typically is around -18 to -16 but for Last Jedi I had to bump it up to -8 to get any decent sound and even then IMO the audio was just average compared to other BD's. Thor- Ragnarok was the same but at -8 it sounds excellent but still no where near BD's like Wonder Women (one of best I've heard) or classics like TIH, WOTW, Tron-Legacy and the first Thor. I feel like they have lost the art of studio recording and wish the person who mixed those mentioned movies would do the more recent ones. Going to JB Hi-Fi today so any recommendations on some reference 4K BD's? Yes, Disney don't want to scare the kiddies, so bass is filtered and turned down - just sucks the life out of any action. If you're a fan of the original Bladerunner, the UHD is a must have - I was gobsmacked by the picture quality. The audio has been reworked - directionality has improved, but the dynamic range is a little compressed IMO. 1

SimonNo10 Posted May 6, 2018 Posted May 6, 2018 Thanks. As mentioned I have Wonder Women already in 4k and that is what I expect from a modern movie mix. Bladerunner 2049 is excellent but don’t own the original in 4k. Just bought Deepwater Horizon in 4k as I read that has some impressive bass and great audio all round. Also a child favourite The Dark Crystal 4k but not expecting too much from that. 1

Presjar Posted May 21, 2018 Posted May 21, 2018 Has anoyone picked up The Matrix UHD today from JB? Looks like they started selling today in stores. $25 Interested to hear from anoyone woth atmos setup if the height speakers are used well. E.g are the sprinkler water sounds coming from the roof during the lobby scene? Any other details would be great.
superaaaa Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 Some online reviews (incl Avsforum) rate audio quite highly for Matrix UHD. I think it only comes out Thurs. Plan to purchase. Will provide feedback.

For the US release.. https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/57599/thematrix4kultrahdbluray.html In what might be a first (or, at least, a rarity) in the 4K era, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment used a new 4K restoration and Digital Intermediate to create both a 2160p HEVC-encoded Ultra HD Blu-ray with Dolby Vision (and HDR10) high dynamic range grading in the DCI P3 color space, AND a new 1080p AVC MPEG-4-encoded Blu-ray with standard dynamic range grading in the Rec.709 color space. At a time when studios simply include the old Blu-ray and call it a day, this is terrific news, but there's one catch. If you want to enjoy this new transfer or the new Dolby Atmos mix on Blu-ray disc, you have to purchase this 4K set. (NOTE: if this changes, do let us know.) Blu-ray -- 4.0 Stars This is primarily a 4K review, but let's start with the new Blu-ray first because, in and of itself, it's a dramatic upgrade from the 2009-era Blu-ray. Even though our writer awarded that release a 5-star video grade at the time, in hindsight, and in comparing all three discs for this review, I'd call the original MatrixBlu-ray a 3.0 or 3.5 transfer at best. It's a mess of digital tinkering, poor detail rendering, smeared color grading, and banding galore. Pop in this new Blu-ray and you are rewarded with more detail, improved contrast, and much less banding. In other words, the 1080p Blu-ray is an obvious upgrade that makes its older sibling look fugly by comparison. Also, I'd argue this new master looks much closer to the film's original theatrical presentation and less like the Reloaded/Revolutions green-everywhere color grading that was a bit like that first Fellowship of the Ring Blu-ray. Skin tones and contrast are on point and there's plenty of shadow detail, but without HDR, black levels hover somewhere just-above true black. The special and visual effects still look good, for the most part, save for the CGI-generated machines, which can seem a bit flat and cartoony when not drenched in shadows. There's also a touch of banding and haloing around contrasty subjects, but it's not severe. Despite a few flaws, The Matrix has never looked better in HD. Available on both the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray (thank you, Warners!), The Matrix roars to life with an intense, reference quality Atmos mix that's sure to test the accuracy of any Dolby Atmos home theater system or sound bar. The movie has been a go-to demo disc since the days of DVD, but this is a whole other level. If any of you read my recent Gladiator and Braveheart 4K reviews, you may recall that I enjoyed those mixes, but felt they were holding back in terms of overhead immersion. The Matrix, by comparison, is foot-to-the-floor wide open throttle the whole time. And the best part? Because the movie oozes kinetic, mind-bending visuals, aggressive overhead and surround panning fits the aesthetic perfectly. Rain and thunder cascade from above. When the camera pushes into The Matrix, it feels like you're falling into another world. When the bullets slow down to super slow motion, it sounds like they're just missing you. We're talking Fury Road levels of hemispherical immersion, folks, and this sound mix is shiny and chrome on the road to Valhalla -- oh, what a day, what a lovely day! LFE effects are also impressive, punctuating gunshots and explosions with heart-pounding grunt. Dialogue is clean and intelligible. Don Davis' pulsating score also surrounds the audience as it helps build the movie's sensations of tension, horror, and wonder. Everything sounds clean and dynamic and like it was recorded in 2018, not 1999. Honestly, if Warners can make an older mix sound this good, Disney should be embarrassed by their new releases. If you have a Dolby Atmos sound system, you're going to love The Matrix. 1
CAVX Posted May 23, 2018 Posted May 23, 2018 THE MATRIX is not the first UHD/BD combo pack to have a new transfer for the BD. TERMINATOR 2 JUDGEMENT DAY is also a brand new transfer on the BD which is an upgrade from the previous Skynet Edition. I have just finished watching THE MATRIX (UHD) and it is good to see that they have colour corrected it back to the "not so green" look of the original film release. This disc is Dolby Vision and over rides OPPO control on my system, so you can not use MODE 1 2 or 3 for enhancements of HDR content. Whist they have cleaned up the white in the construct, other parts seem a bit noisy. Over all the picture is superb. The blacks are black and the shadow detail is something we've not seen on video before. I'm not just not 100% convinced on the highlights being used as heavy handed as they have been in this new encode. Highlights should be a nice touch like they are in lightning in MAD MAX FURY ROAD. Everything bright seems to get the highlighted treatment in this. This might even be a case of too much of a good thing. The Audio is nice. I don't have ATMOS yet, but the 7.1 Dolby True HD mix that my system does decode sounded really nice. Loud, deep and enveloping. 1
groovem Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Isn't Terminator 2 just the theatrical version? I am so used to watching the extended version I couldn't go back to the theatrical version.

You see these on reflections of light on faces, but the image overall looks very good. When they are brothers, the Wachowskis running audio commentary said that the green tint of the matrix was to show the that something was not quite right with the world. In the first video release, the PAL version of the DVD was more green than the NTSC version. The two sequels were very green and once it came to BD, the first film was colour altered to match the other 2. I'm glad they went back to look closer to the original 35mm film look. The issue I have is the over use of highlights. Even a dull wall light in the room behind Neo is running near max white light on this transfer. The police flash lights at the beginning are just insanely bright and some of the skys seem way over driven to the point of crush. The blacks are solid and the image is the sharpest we have seen this to date. 1
cwt Posted June 16, 2018 Posted June 16, 2018 Just a heads up as to how Hollywood may be encoding some atmos soundtracks in the future to help with atmos delivery streaming bandwidth limits. Especially relevant for those with 7.1.6 ;9.1.6 etc theaters as some titles may be restricted to 7.1.4 channels only Not exactly what was initially marketed as the home version up to 24/10.. As far as watching TE Vs the SE, the only part I really miss is the T-1000 glitching. Though I must admit, "resetting the switch" is a pretty cool scene and should never have been taken out/reshot.

That is actually annoying to read that and I don't even have ATMOS yet. As for the number of overheads, I do think that in a larger room, 6 is really needed. In my own room which is small, 4 is actually pushing it. 2 doesn't quite cut it but still better then none, I suppose. As for the VOG, rather than a single speaker, it needs to be a pair in the centre. I think it would work better for those times you are not seated directly in the centre. A single speaker tends to pull and we've already discussed to death this effect with Dolby Surround EX using a single back speaker. Party why 7.1 came a thing almost 18 years ago.
