Hi Everyone,

Im new to the site and have been looking at getting myself a Sony VPL-HW40ES projector, as my mate recently purchased one and i was truly impressed with the picture quality.

Doing a reasonable amount of research within looking up reviews im sold on now getting myself one.

What i would like to know is, does Sonys next model up offer a major increase in picture quality ..?

I can purchase the HW40ES online for $2885 and the cheapest ive found the 65ES is $5030..

My budget is 4K and so would you advise to save funds and put more towards a receiver or increase the spend to the 65ES ..?

If anyone has seen both units side by side their opion would be greatly appreciated.. :-)

Cheers..

Rather than the 65ES, I'd go for a run-out JVC X500 - going here for $4199 - you might do a little better if you shop around.

The X500 has much better blacks than the Sonys and this makes a big difference to the image.

Before you commit, it would be good to understand your room size, proposed screen size, any mounting limitations and the level of light control in the room, to make sure it's suitable.

Not sure about the 65ES , but having owned the 40ES and upgraded to the JVC X500 can safely say it is a significant improvement , especially with contrast , wonderful deep blacks.

Recently had it professionally calibrated and what I thought was a superb picture before is now leaps and bounds better again , amazing sharpness and clarity.

Highly recommended , really in a different league to the 40ES....as it should be I guess as it was a $6.5k projector when released.

hi marcosky whom did you use for calibration if can pm me to not take this thread off line.

to the OP 2nd hand can bring wonderfull bargains, as long as buying something with solid track record or with warranty then nothing to worry about.

for new pricing contact retailers directly or better still walk in a shop talk to a human, you will find beats online pricing any day of the week.

I would also be wary about one particular online retailer. will not name here..but they are thieves, known for swapping in grey import, wont have stock (mainly because they have to grey import) and particularly be wary about eBay and what might look like a potential bargain....when they are often not with what can buy from a shop or B&M retailer.

we do have a few forum commercial members too with long standing here, would be worth your while contacting them they often go out of way to help out forum members :)

My friend just recently bought himself a new 65 (at a damn good price i might add) and was very impressed with the picture quality of it; the contrast of it was very nice compare to my old TW3600... especially when I played the final fight scene in Godzila... the black scenes just came alive... I was coming from a black screen with only moving blackness to seeing everything clearly.... like seeing things under a clear moon light vs a cloudy night with no light source... picture was smooth with no hint of jutters... his room was light controlled, but not treated... so he was still getting bright reflection from the ceiling and the side wall; but was still bright enough to see everything, without the black looking washed out. However, I did notice when we played with the smooth motion option, we noticed a lot of artitifacts around James Bond's fine cut suit in Skyfall during the opening scene. turned off and it was all good. slight lens convergence in the middle edge of the display as he maxed zoom the projector to fit 120" from just under 3.8m... it was really bright... I think he can afford to run the projector alot dimmer, but he likes it bright... I got blinded a few times when during a dark scene a torch light shined on screen which made me squint... JJ Abrams' lens flare fans beware :D

Add: just remember... when my friend was swapping disc during the black screen... I have noted the corners around the screen were "slightly" brighter than the middle of the screen... is this caused by the max zoom? Not noticable during movies though

However, I did look at the 40ES and the comparison was also very good... to my understanding, the 40 is brighter which is good for room with some ambient light (my room), but with less control over the settings compare to the 65 and the 55; colour control was also not as great as the higher model; so if you are not into alot of fine tuning, and happy with out of the box settings with minimal adjustment, the 40 should be good enough.

When the store demoed the X500... the picture was beautiful... the black was awsome and smooth... looked smoother than my friend's 65 even when smooth option was used without the artifacts... plus the screen was around 150" and was projecting from more than 6m away..... the X500 is not as bright ,but from that distance it was bright enough... compared it in a black room and with some ambient light from an open door, the picture did not suffer too much....

Store manager did mention to my friend the X500 would be a better choice against the 65 if he had to pay full price for it... but then, the manager's special was too good for my friend to pass...

add:

if you are a gamer, then the Sony would be a better option with less input lag... based on review I have seen JVC is 132ms compare to Sony's 21ms to 107ms lag

It Does depend on what games u play really.......i have played games like dragon age origins, bioshock infinite and Witcher 3 on a JVC X500 with no issue. Not sure i would want to play an online fps with it though.
