Sitt Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 I'm in the market for a UHD 4K player and was thinking about the Panasonic DMP-U900 especially now that the price has dropped. I have tried to do a comparison between the new UB400 and the U900 but can't really see any benefit of the newer player over the previous model. I'm thinking it may be better to buy the older model - is there a benefit of getting the new UB400 that I missed?
jutta Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 The 400 is a lower spec model. But does everything the same mostly. You lose audio outs I think Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Then compare ; it could save heaps = do you really need sacd disc playback.. The oppo doesn't have 4k Netflix or possible 4k amazon either. In the interim you can see if your Yamaha avr can handle a true UHD hdr10 signal from the pana's single hdmi output . If its got a clean passthrough there is no need to run separate video/audio hdmi outs [ and you will have tested it for when you want to sell] . Thats what an avr is designed for ; easy switching of hdmi and losing the inevitable rats nest of cables... na I have the Pana now and when Dolby Vision comes out on some disc it will be time for Oppo to come out with a new model and being the No 1 players again on the PQ side.
Blackman1503561291 Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 Talk about DV I read some where about the first DV UHD Blu ray Coming out but I forgot what it was. Does anyone know what it is?

duke Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I tend to find my Pana on my LG which has no HDR seems not that crisp. Often a standard Bluray on my Oppo looks better than the 4K on the Pana Don't know if I have some setting wrong or what.

Don't expect a new model oppo too soon Blackman ; they have to recoup all the r&d costs on the current "all new'" chassis and chipset Any new oppo wont be much better on the pq side ; they have in the past just swapped chipsets like qdeo and abt for their sd models which affects dvd's primarily .. Heres a good read on how consistent past generations of oppo's have been from the people who rated heaps of dvd players in the past [secrets dvd benchmark] http://hometheaterhifi.com/technical/technical-reviews/blu-ray-player-hdmi-benchmark-introduction/ The other wrinkle is of course HDR10+ ; If it takes off you may be happy with just the 1 player But Ime a stinge

Sony have one although it's not available here yet AFAIK.
cwt Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Yes LG ; a bit thin on the ground being proprietary tech ; maybe the Philips will turn up ? http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1483982195

Yes I will wait for some feed back on the Oppo for DV as people are still having trouble with the Oppo 203 as one said he cannot or having trouble with Unforgiven in UHD

Yes Rob ; that's a bit more definite than the bit in my link ; https://www.engadget.com/2017/02/25/dolby-vision-hdr-in-software/ ;"'Dolby tells Forbes that Vision is now available in pure software form, enabling its take on HDR for any reasonably capable device. In theory, your console, media hub or TV can get Vision support through an update.'" Media hub could mean anything .. Hopefully any software emulation will be close to what a dedicated chipset can achieve
kdoot Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 JB Hifi is selling the UB900 for $498 at the moment. Is that as good a price as it looks on first glance?

It's a good price right now. Consider however, that it was released with an $899rrp, then almost immediately dropped to $798 in stores, then $648 and then $598 in March, now $498 in May. I suspect Panasonic is not selling very many at all and are dropping the price furiously to break into the market. I would guess this is a similar story for all UHD players out there at the moment. Sammy and LG are doing the same thing (LG's unit has only been out a very short time and already $120 off initial rrp - Samsung's player was initially $599rrp and now sits a hair under $300 in 'Big Yellow' and a few other stores). Of course, Oppo will not get involved in a price war. 1
betty boop Posted June 13, 2017 Author Posted June 13, 2017 Grab while can as my understanding a limited pana backed promotion. And then likky back up again. 600 or so is not unusual to find this at. . At best.
