spewka Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) Hi all My brother rang the other day and wants me to help him get a new TV. Size - i figure 40" maximum Usage - mostly sport (AFL & Rugby League) Cost - Less $1,000 (pensioner - leagally blind, but played squash at a high level which I've never been able to understand) No internet or anything special is required, just free to air. I haven't bought a TV since 2008 (Panny plaza still going great) so am worried about motion blur. Just googling, most are LED LCD at that price. Are any of them any good or do they get blur on the action? Thanks in advance Edited June 8, 2016 by Spewka
pgdownload Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 1st option: Give him the panny plasma for $500 (does great at sport), then reframe the question on what new TV you want. 2nd option: Don't worry about motion blur. At his age and extra eyesight deficiency just about any screen will provide what his acuity can handle. Also most modern TVs handle motion blur almost too well. The bottle neck is the broadcast quality. Watching sport on FTA SD can be painfull. Suggest you and your brother make a day of hitting JB HiFi etc. and just looking at screens (preferably showing a footy show and not cartoons.) You should easily find one in your budget that works. Owen Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 For those with a visual impairment, the best thing you can do is go for a MUCH larger TV. The "quality" of the TV is secondary, but size REALLY matters and will dominate the viewing experience. A 40" TV should only be considered if the viewing distance is well under 2m, and depending on visual acuity a 60" may still be much better at that distance.
