Johnny_Boy Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Hi All, Been out of the AV game for a few years and not sure what the latest is. My old trusty Pioneer BDP-51P is showing signs of age, not playing some discs and skipping sections on perfectly good BD's. I do have a PS3 that i use as a back up and for 3D, but i find it just does't sound as good and picture to me looks off. Might be in my head but still. So, looking for something to replace the Pioneer. No real brand preference and it will be running through my Denon 3313. Eventually i plan to set up Atmos with a new receiver, so not sure if that needs that funciton or the receiver will handle it. Not really fussed about 4k at the moment, thats way to much money to upgrade everything at the moment Ideally under $500 Cheers
BuffySlayer Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Blu ray player will have to be relatively new (so no 2nd hand unless new-ish), as older models cannot handle Atmos soundtracks which use seamless branching.

Checking the specs of my old Pioneer, it can do both Dolby TrueHD and bitstream audio output. This website says thats all thats required for atmos http://www.bigpicturebigsound.com/Existing-Blu-ray-Player-Dolby-Atmos-and-DTS-X.shtml Surely its not that big of an ask then considering my machine is 6yrs old. Would ideally prefer new in anycase.
BuffySlayer Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 I have an atmos set up and my Yamaha bluray player was less than 5 years old, had to replace it for reasons mentioned above.

Johnny_Boy Posted August 17, 2016 Author Posted August 17, 2016 So any suggestions on any specific BD players?
jutta Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Pana UHD if I was buying right now Keep Casting - JC
BuffySlayer Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 In the sub $500 range you really need to look for features that you're after, such as Netflix etc. I like to pair my player with AVR, but if that's of no concern I'd suggest Panasonic generally put out a solid unit in that price range.

Johnny_Boy Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Like i said, i'm not fussed about 4K at the moment. Just a standard BD player that has Atmos. Dont need netflix or even a internet connection on it........recomendations?
