Alan Parson's Eye In The Sky. Bluray audio dts ma. This would be a 10 out of 10 on the wow factor, brilliant stuff. It makes me wonder while listening to this on why would any one spend 10s of thousands on a 2 channel system, there is just no comparison but then you would probably get bored of the 0.002 percent of bluray audio titles available compared to conventional 2 channel stuff.

Time to revive this thread, now that we have another convert!

Yello's Point has made it to the top of the pops in QuadraphonicQuad users poll, but note that it is early days with only 13 votes.

@Homer J Garry, as the owner of the 2nd largest collection of MCH (multi channel) music in Melbourne & Australia, what would you recommend for someone starting out on their MCH journey?

As you know, the QQ list contains many albums that are out of print, and even used ones are rare & costly. So, please suggest some titles that are

easy to get but will leave a good impression of MCH.

I am new to mch and just about to set up my 5.1 system, but I have read some good reviews about this album and some other released by Heads Up label some years ago.

Thank you and welcome to the MCH world.  That link to the specific SACD release did not work, but this link to the general album does

It did not make the QQ poll because it had less than 10 votes, but here are some comments

Just received a copy of the Joan Armatrading (Self Titled) SACD. Apart from taking forever to reach me from Elusive Disc in Chicago the disc is wonderful to listen too. The Analogue Production company did the re-mastering and like a lot of their efforts ( eg,The Hot Spot SACD) this disc was certainly worth the wait.

Cheers

My Yello Point finally arrived and agree it is an excellent reference for multi channel (MCH) music.

2 timeless albums from Santana: Santana (1) and Abraxas are also worthy MCH references. From Japan as a mini LP in SACD Quad.  It is Carlos Santana at his best with terrific use of all 4 channels.  Note: not for the traditionalist!

Most impressive audio wise  and physically; the mini LP format recreates the tactile feel of vinyl, with sleeve, booklet etc.  From CD Japan, exy but I think worth it.

I have seen only 5-star reviews about Santana album! Good purchase

Strictly not a music BD Audio disc, but the Atmos track of Hans Zimmer Live in Prague has been mixed to take advantage of all channels.  One for fans of MCH music.

Do try Isao Tomita Planets Quad SACD, an interesting and enjoyable interpretation. However, Gustav Holst's relatives said that Tomita had manhandled their father's great composition and  'The Planets' was taken out of market for a few years by a court order!  So definitely not for the traditionalist..

There are 3 other Tomita entries in the QQ Poll.  By the way, Yello - Point has fallen from #1 to a still respectable #12.

My taste normally does not extend to electronic music, but I now have a few more Tomita SACDs like this.

It was a fun presentation of Pictures at an Exbhition. It reminds me of the time when I first listened to Mussorgsky's piece at the Sydney Opera House, sitting at the choir seats (they were the cheapest seats!). Things were different but enjoyable...

@att23, not sure how open you are to Electronic music interpretations of classical music, but the above Tomita SACDs of the Planets and Pictures at an Exhibition are non traditional and quite fun to listen to.

The following is for people who are not familiar with multi channel music from 2L (small Norwegian company, mostly classical, some jazz).  The music is recorded as multi channel.

You can start with 2 albums (has both blu ray and SACD), 2L the Nordic Sound, and Arnesen's Magnificat, said to be the best selling album on the 2L label.

Also, downloadable samples, including a track from Magnificat.

@Snoopy8 I already have Tomita’s Firebird, Clair de Lune, Daphne & Chloe and also Planets sacd’s. However, tbh I couldn’t quite get on with them as well as I want to…..  I didn’t get the Pictures at an Exhibition, cos that’s one of my favourite/familiar work, so I think I may have an issue with his presentation of classical pieces.
Really strange, because I love his “Snowflakes are Dancing” vinyl record from the 70s, my one and only Tomita record.

In one way, I am not surprised by your reluctance to listen to Tomita's Pictures at an Exhibition  (also one of my favourite pieces).  At least you accept 2L's interpretations of placing instruments all round.  Tomita requires a further leap in faith with an electronic multi channel version.  I do my serious music listening on stereo, but enjoy multi channel music because it provides a different perspective.  For example, Tomita's version of Ballet of Unhatched Chicks is fun.

Anyway, there are other multi channel music besides Tomita.  With your help and others, I hope to get more people interested....

A surprise Atmos entry from Deutsche Grammaphon (DG)!   John Williams, Live in Vienna.

image.png.af78c21369357d0df388c58dbe78ab8d.png

DG has been a stodgy old label who produce some very good stereo recordings but remain unimaginative with the use of the surround channels.  Like most classical labels,  DG usually reserved the surround channels for the audience, politely clapping.  So, it was a surprise to hear the surround channels capturing the reverb of the orchestra in the concert hall.  It made for a much better listening experience.  The other nice difference is the use of a separate Pure Audio layer for when you want to listen to music only (sans audience).  Note that the Pure Audio layer has slightly different tracks.

This is probably the best that DG will do with MCH music, very much aimed at the traditional classical music listener.  However, if you are open to something different, I would suggest Hans Zimmer: Live in Prague (mentioned previously).

Thank you @att23 for the recommendation.
