JukKluk2 Posted August 25, 2017 Posted August 25, 2017 (edited) It's a bit like asking you to pick your favourite grandchild (with all of your children standing in front of you, waiting for an answer). The choice has to be from when Steve Howe joined, up to and including the one album on which Patrick Moraz made his singular contribution in the studio: The Yes Album Fragile Close to the Edge Tales from Topographic Oceans Relayer. It is possible to argue that each and every one of these albums is the apotheosis of their output. Taken collectively they represent just that, but which to choose? By default you could choose the triple lp live set, Yessongs, which amalgamates the first three of those albums and brings the thrill of live performance to the table. The only drawback with Yessongs is the recording quality. It's not the best live album ever released, though there was a remastered version released earlier this century, and there is the 14 disc Progeny set available which has the seven concerts from which Yessongs was compiled, in better sound than you would expect based upon what came first. Personally, I cannot whittle it down any further from those that I have already mentioned. Far easier is my choice of their worst album, the dreadful Open Your Eyes. What were they thinking? Even the universally deplored (by the band) Union, an album that I mostly like, outperforms it by a very long way. So, @Grumpy , you need to pick up copies of Fragile, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer at the very least. Adding Yessongs to the collection will be an added bonus. And that's just a bare-boned Yes collection. I own almost every officially released album that bears their name so trust me when I say that it is easily possible to choose another six of their albums instead of these and still find yourself bathing in untold musical delights. (Was also looking for but didn't find Not Fragile by BTO) I want to buy a used copy of Fragile just to see if it is to my liking before I buy the quite expensive 180g re-release one that is new ..

With regard to BTO Not Fragile. I have an original pressing and the 180g Music On Vinyl pressing. If I could only keep one it would be the original. MOV version has a fatter bottom end but the mids are muddier. So on a good system you will find the original pressing better overall. Plus the cover artwork is embossed and clearer. The MOV artwork looks like a really bad copy. Not sure which "expensive 180g re-release" of Yes Fragile you are referring to but may I suggest going for the Analogue Productions remaster. I have it and it sounds great. BTW could be cheaper to pickup a used CD of Fragile to try to see if it is to your liking, rather than a used record. 1

Kudos to you all for your great suggestions. May I also recommend however Jon Anderson's incredible solo album called Olias of Sunhillow. It is a very bold piece of music and stands head and shoulders above everything else he released later. It is somewhat reminiscent of the style found on Tales of Topographic Oceans (essential IMO) but probably won't be as easy to find compared to any of the Yes records. These contain original and new mixes and various single edits etc: Fragile Tales from Topographic Oceans Close to the Edge Relayer The Yes Album Steven Wilson did the new surround remixes.
