Grizaudio Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 How did you decide/select the throat angle on the adapter?

What woofers are you running? Have you considered going Active? 1

Cheers - Build looks great. What woofers are you running? Have you considered going Active? These are pancake drivers, so the phase plug comes right up to the flyscreen and they don't have a well defined exit angle. I prefer to go straight to the horn coverage angle, as full tractrix or exponential horns with narrow throat angles make the high frequencies way too narrow in dispersion Faital 15PR400 woofers, they are by far the best woofers i have heard for this application. Sensitive and extension to 30hz in room reliably At the moment they are running active through a driverack PA2, but it should be easy to do a decent passive crossover. It would be a waste to have a 100+db/w system and not be able to use low power tube amps with it Edited May 16, 2023 by oohms 2
Grizaudio Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Nice work. I have considered using the Faital 15pr400. By all accounts a great performing and value driver. In modelling the driver responds quite well to EQ within its xmax. I actually have a pair of 12pr300, B&C de250 and Seos waveguides to ‘do something with’. But the project got put on hold after listening to my current cabs. My current compression driver runs 20khz to 700hz. I have really enjoyed having a point source driver from 700hz up, it just sounds amazing, especially EQd to Harman curve. if you would care to share some freq sweeps, clarity sweeps and spectrograms/waterfalls I would love to see them. great work…
steuersenkung Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 (edited) Dear Oohms, I have been in owning of a pair of Klipsch Cornwall 3 for a long time and have been very enthusiastic about you so far. The dream of a Klipsch Jubilee I would never have been able to fulfill financially. I find here in Europe for over 53,000 dollars completely is for me overpriced. Your construction plan of a Klipschhorn K402 has given me courage to try it too. so far I had only square things made of wood. the horn with its many angles has cost me here and there some nerves. The first listening test made me forget all troubles and the corners of my mouth grow up to my ears. I am just thrilled with it. I got myself a Celestion AXI 2050 for this purpose. Currently only tested with a simple capacitor 3.3uf upstream with a 300B tube amplifier. Final there should be once a DSP. And later still the matching folded bass horn too. Dear Oohms, Thank You very much, to help us, make dreams come true. With Best Regards from Boris South Germany South Germany Edited May 29, 2023 by steuersenkung 5 4
steuersenkung Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 (edited) Joseph Crowe made a ver nice documented test about the celestion AXI 2050 driver https://josephcrowe.com/blogs/news/celestion-axi2050 Edited May 29, 2023 by steuersenkung
oohms Posted May 30, 2023 Author Posted May 30, 2023 They look amazing! I'm glad i could be of help You song recommendations are good too, the Zhao Peng track is one I listen to on this system from time to time 1
JeffMazon Posted July 26, 2023 Posted July 26, 2023 This project has me encouraged enough to build these beautiful K402 replicas for my AXI2050. Hopefully I can pull it off. Excited Do you know where I can download the black round phase plug for the Axi2050 shown on @steuersenkungpost above? Of if you have the file, could you please share? Thanks a lot. 1

oohms Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 Getting close to the end of the project, I procrastinate a lot. But powering through, the speakers are assembled Here they are in their final spots 6 2
oohms Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 (edited) Running them actively crossed over with DSP is convenient, but too easy. Crossover design time! Measuring the drivers in place with REW Together with impedance measurements using a DATS, then using a nifty program called xmachina to iterate and come up with a couple of potential designs Simplifying the design and sanity checking using xsim Then putting together prototypes for a listening test They sound amazing in place, and given the nature of the design, I don't think there is a substantially better design to be had. After a month or so of listening, I am happy Because of the speaker placement and nature of this design, they will need equalizing to sound perfect. This design only gets the crossover point right and equalises the horn close to optimal. Edited September 22, 2023 by oohms 1
oohms Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 I've updated the stereo stack to be all analog and include a pair of 31 band EQs to dial in the sound perfectly To my ears, this sounds better than the initial DSP setup There are several ways to dial this in. One is trial and error using REW and a measurement mic, another is using a behringer DEQ2496 to generate pink noise and to show the real time response from the mic while I twiddle with the EQ. The latter is what I have initially done 2
Rrobot Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 This is one of the most brilliantly OTT projects I've seen on here - I love the fact that they barely fit below your ceiling. Fantastic stuff. If I still lived in Newport I'd buy you a beer (or whatever) at the Junction Hotel for sharing this journey with us all!

oohms Posted September 27, 2023 Author Posted September 27, 2023 Crossovers are done! The TS sockets are to get a direct connection to the drivers, either for active amplification, or more measurements for future crossover development. They are mounted onto masonite and screwed into the bracing on the back of the horns.. now I just need to upgrade the plinths and explore dust covers for the woofers at some point 3
La scala Posted October 4, 2023 Posted October 4, 2023 Absolutely Impressive inspirational build and excecution , you should be very very proud. Look forward to reading more on your progress and fine tuning. Personally found tweets close to the 15” drivers gives vibrant snap and definition , does look snazzy ceiling mounted too. Looks like you are using JBL M2 Marquis danceclub comp drivers in the 402s , got some too but to my ears are not near field friendly etc after hearing several non titanium drivers. Keep up up the splendid build and enjoy 2 1

oohms Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 The speakers are still going strong, and haven't changed since last time One of the woofers developed a crackle, but re mounting it a couple of times fixed the problem I know youtube recordings are frowned upon, but here goes I bought a 2w SET - Eric McChanson's 6FD7 amp - and it sounds lovely on these, even playing fairly loud Then i decided to test an all tube signal chain, with a tube phono preamp 6
La scala Posted February 9 Posted February 9 The Daft Punk video sounds pretty spot on. You tube audio vids work well enough to determine what’s going on , I think it’s rather handy and offers good insight , well done. Been playing around with a similar 402 sized horn on top of the old La Scalas , sounding much easier on the ears via the large mid horn. Be nice to have another BMS Coaxial comp driver to play with in the workshop system as much prefer the point source arrangement over multiple horns for mids and highs. 5

The Peavey Horn Model is unknown, very vintage large format unit, however came loaded with the Peavey A/A - 4000T monster sized 4" voicecoil compression driver, a rare and surprising unit that to my ears sounds far superior for Hi Fi to others i have on hand such as the normally famed genuine diaphragmed JBL 2240, 2241, 2425s. 3 1
Andrew Tilsley Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Love it...and not a high-cost speaker cable in sight...! I've always invested in cabinets/drivers over cables and 'bling.' The 402 horn could work nicely on a Belle Klipsch. I built one recently. This one was in 25mm birch ply, with American Walnut veneer. The Bill Woods conical horn was not mine, though have built a similar one. Keep up the good work. 4 1
