wasabijim Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 been off the bike for a bit with hip troubles, so did some tinkering flashy rainbow bleed port bolts new saint BB and XT crank set to replace the legacy Race Face cranks with it's dubious single bolt to preload bearings and hold the thing together. it had chewed out the XT BB just put on half a year back, grrrr. digging the gold-silver even if it's not really inline with the overall colours at play. 5
alex87 Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 (edited) Now that I'm about to move away from the bicycle industry, I thought it an appropriate time to share some pictures of my pride & joy. This bike was only possible with the help & generosity of some very kind mentors who shared freely their knowledge, time & resources. A very huge thank you to them! David A Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 @alex87 That's the kind of workmanship and attention to detail that costs a lot of quan if you're buying a bike from Colnago or Pinarello. Nice work . 1
Steff Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 (edited) A friend and I were exploring northwards yesterday. I started from home (inner north) to my friend's near Batman Station, and from there we tracked up towards the Western Ring Road, winding our way around the side of Northern Memorial Park (a new cemetery north of Fawkner Cemetery). The ride eastward and north along the ring road and along the Hume HWY is really rather unpleasant. Noise and fumes. Which we did expect. But all on bike path. Lunch at Craigieburn Plaza. And a very very glorious ride back through the large valley meandering down from Craigieburn to Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Westmeadows, Strathmore (I think) along the Moonee Ponds Creek. I can not recommend that section of the ride enough. It's like living in the country side. It's downhill (losing 200m elevation from Craigieburn). And most days there's a northerly, so that you're literally rolling most of the way. Along the way we rescued to boys in a playground who were marooned on a platform, their bikes off at a short distance. A magpie had set its eye on them and wouldn't allow them off the platform. They hailed us, and we walked them away and out of range. Their amazed large family standing about 200m away. *head scratch* For the northern section we followed this very helpful route: https://www.melbournecycleloops.com/m5-wrr-galada-tamboore-malcolm In total, about 76km for me in mild sunny conditions. He's up there with the big players as far as I can tell You're right, their frames are not inexpensive. But great value considering it includes a full fit, a custom geometry built to suit the rider at no extra. Their ideas are also very progressive, they were one of the first to offer 34mm of tyre clearance on a road bike in 2017, and one of the first all-road bikes with tyre clearance at 40mm for the Orbis+. The big players are only starting to adopt these ideas recently. People tend to ride these frames for a long long time. I often meet other owners out on the road who are still daily riding their 10+ year old frames.
Godot Posted October 4, 2024 Posted October 4, 2024 Mrs Godot and I saddled up for a lap around Mt Buffalo yesterday. A beautiful day out, solid climbing up Goldie Spur track from the Buckland Valley. Some great views of the beautiful Mt Buffalo National Park from up close and from a distance as we rode through Myrtleford back to Bright via Porepunkah. 5 3

The road up the Buckland Valley is a mostly quite sealed rural road, which is a beautiful ride with views of that side of Mt Buffalo. Goldie Spur track is a 4wd track that mostly follows the power lines up and over the ridge. It is steep, from that direction gradients of a steady 12 - 16 % and a rough loose surface near the top of the climb. There is a long descent back to Lake Buffalo, once back there it is about 20 kms on a sealed road back to Myrtleford, again a mostly quiet rural road if you aren’t there on weekends/school holidays. Myrtleford to Bright is all on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, well worth exploring all the way up to Harrietville, also links up to Beechworth and Yackandandah. Enjoy! 1

Nice work . I'd suggest to you this bike frame costs more than anything coming out of Colnago or Pinarello. A Baum has always been my dream bike but at well into 5 figures cost for the frame alone and close to a 2 year lead time, it will probably never happen. 2

I'm not familiar with that brand, so i'll have to read up on them. Fantastic that they're located in Geelong, so I could sit down face to face with them and spec a bike, then pick it up from the factory. I'm surprised they flew under my radar. Steever Posted November 30, 2024 Posted November 30, 2024 My current and favouritest bike of all I’ve had is a Rocky Mountain Vertex RSL. It’s completed with Shimano XTR brakes and drivetrain, 29” American Classic wheels, Raceface Next SL bars/crank/post. I’m in the process of researching rigid carbon forks to replace the Rockshox SID currently there. 8

Godot Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 From our house you can see Mt Emu, it is an obvious clearing on the high point of the range on the other side of the Kiewa Valley. It has been cleared for use as a launching site for hang gliders and paragliders. A solid approach via Mountain Creek, Trappers Gap and Eskdale Spur Track gets you there. Beautiful views on a clear day, an amazing topography to enjoy looking out over. 7 2

playdough Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 5 years on with this one is almost ready for new tyres, or at least a back one. Only ever tightened the chain once. Keep 32psi in the tyres, is pretty well the only things. I enjoy riding on one wheel,,,,,,,the back one. 3

Yes, because there's 5m of flat track every kilometre that lowers the average gradient. Haven't we all been on roads like that! 1
