Mike13 Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 Hi Does anyone have a view on which of these is better? Anyone tried both? Cheers Michael
DoggieHowser Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 The AK is a simpler all in one system. The phone isnt isn’t a great transport. But I like the ability to swap the phone for a better PC that will sound better. Or a Chord Poly which sounds as good as an optimized PC. I wouldnt like to organize my music a second time - Roon already does a great job across my main system DAC and my Poly-Mojo.
Mike13 Posted January 8, 2018 Author Posted January 8, 2018 Hi DoggieH I think the AK does the same thing as the Poly right? Isn’t your phone still the transport to Poly? I have a Mojo now. You’re right, the PC sounds noticeably better using Foobar, than my iPhone using Tidal or OnkyoHD. Have you you heard AK. 1 minute ago, DoggieHowser said: The AK is a simpler all in one system. DoggieHowser Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Yes I have heard the AK. The one I heard was the old flagship 280? The thing is - and it applies to my non portable gear as well - is what I’m willing to pay for a device that uses off the shelf chip [emoji51] even if it does sound good. So I’d pay the price for a DirectStream DAC but not the Ayre QX5 I’d pay for a Chord DAVE (haven’t yet but I would) rather than a LUMIN flagship Etc. The Poly can be controlled using a phone app but it is a DLNA renderer and an MPD compliant device. Firmware on the Poly is still a little iffy from what I’ve seen in the forums but for my usage - as a Roon endpoint it has been rock solid. I’m waiting for the official iOS app to support Playback from SD card - right now been beta testing Glider which has finally gotten the Poly to run at full functionality.
Mike13 Posted January 8, 2018 Author Posted January 8, 2018 You mean you won’t buy something with an off the shelf chip? Does the poly improve sound enough for phone to compete with AK? I was tempted by Poly.
DoggieHowser Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Depends on the price. I’m happy to get the Oppo 205 with the 9038 chipset [emoji51]I prefer the Sound signature of the Chord.
Mike13 Posted March 22, 2018 Author Posted March 22, 2018 Had the AK240 for a while now. Can’t say I can tell a difference with between it and Mojo plus iPhone. Controlling it remotely with my phone is good. Can play Tidal this way. Can’t do it for lengthy periods though because it has to pair through WiFi and that’d drain the battery.
