ARC 101 Series 2 Restoration

I have purchased a pair of ARC 101 speakers that are in pretty poor shape that I am going to restore.

 

The speakers have been painted black over the veneer also a steel speaker grill was added.

The original woofers were missing so I purchased a pair of the correct ones for the speakers which were Mordant Short DSB-208.

 

The first thing I will do is remove all the speakers and start removing some of the paint with methylated spirits because some of the original decals are under the paint and I don't want to loose them.

 

I was able to remove the paint and save some of the decals.

 

The next step is so lightly sand the veneer and patch any holes on the front speaker face where screws have been added.

After some sanding I have got the speakers back to the veneer which has made a massive difference for the overall look of the speakers.

I have filled all the deep scratches on the veneer with timber putty.

The front panel needed some filler to fix all of the marks and it will be sanded back and painted flat black.

 

The next step will be painting the front face aswell as vanishing the veneer.

After sanding back the front of the speakers and a couple of coats of flat black paint I am happy with how the front of the speakers are looking.

 

I vanished the veneer with satin vanish.

 

The speakers were put back together and now with all of the original speakers and sound great!

I picked up a pair of these today and wouldn’t be surprised if they’re the exact ones pictured here. Looking at the filler marks on the veneer I’d say they’re it. Did you sell these in Melbourne by any chance?
