I have been offered a Marantz 4400 Quadraphonic receiver at a VERY attactive price. It seems in very good order.

From what I can glean from google they were highly regarded in their day. (late 70's)

Does anybody here own one or can anybody voice an opinion whether its worth buying or not.

It will only be used for 2 channel mode.

Cheers guys.

Depends on what your paying for it. If it puts a smile on your dial.

Best 4 channel receiver ever made, by anyone, anywhere. The 4400 is HIGHLY desirable. If you don't want it, I'll take it. Look at eBay for old sale prices and you will see just how desirable the 4400 is. Very well built, full complementary output stages. Output stages are bridgeable for 2 channel operation, but be careful if you plan to use difficult speaker loads. The CRO (if it works) is useful and very cool.

[EDIT] The 4400 was a very reliable 4 channel receiver. Except for the CRO. 50 Watts/channel @ 8 Ohms (4 channel operation) or 125 Watts/channel @ 8 Ohms (2 channel operation). As typical of the old Marantz products, you can expect these figures to be extremely conservative. It's been so long since I measured one, I don't recall the figures, but you can expect to see around 70 Watts in 4 channel operation and around 160 Watts in 2 channel. Again: Be careful with speakers rated at less than 8 Ohms, when using 2 channel.
