Wozza_Lee Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Hello all, After a recent purchase of a 'diy amp' from mwhoustan I have decided to start to get into giving it a go. I have built a few sets of diy speakers and have been very happy with the results. My last set which was entirely of my own design, (some may remember my crossover questions) are now finished and sound fantastic. I would like to try a tube amp or preamp, is there any recommendations for a first timer, kits etc that you would recommend. I have been looking at oatley electronics but am open to any/all opinions. I think that a preamp would be a simpler first try? The speakers are 87db 4ohm so are relatively tough to power.

Greetings, This is a very simple design for a valve pre that sounds pretty good if build well. I gave this a go years back and got it sounding quite good, eventually even upgrading to tantalum resistors and a some better caps. https://diyparadise.com/w/how-to-build-your-own-tube-preamp/ Best of luck, it’s good fun. 1
mwhouston Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 (edited) Mate, which of my amps do you have? Look for kits on eBay. Makes it easy for your early builds. Edited April 15, 2018 by mwhouston
Wozza_Lee Posted April 15, 2018 Author Posted April 15, 2018 The 'retro 4040' its a chip amp. But as with most things I have decided that diy is the best bang for the buck
mwhouston Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Glad you liked it. If I can help you have my number. 2
Wozza_Lee Posted April 20, 2018 Author Posted April 20, 2018 Nothing as of yet, I have been really super busy with work so haven't had a chance to figure out what I want. Kind of deciding on if a amp or preamp would be easier to start.
