The OLEDS for the money are a bit risky with image retention and screen burn in aren't they?

Yep, we current owners should either return them or burn them and just get it over with!

I was concerned to understand this a bit better so I have done my research.   The testing they put these through to get any impact is pretty unrealistic in the real world.   Permanent burn in takes weeks to show in - see RTINGS test - 20 hours a day - it took about 4 weeks before faint burn-in on started to appear.   So only an issue in the real world if you are buying a used display set - you want to check particularly red (say the Marvel title screen would be a good test).   Or if you leave the screen on a text page while you go away on holiday for a month!    see RTINGS test here

Temporary burn is what it says - temporary - goes away in minutes.  And again only a real world issue if you play one video game for hours at a time OR use a particular news or other channel that keeps a bright logo on the screen all the time.  A  few minutes of playing normal moving images and it goes away.  Or they have a pixel refresh feature in the menu.

If anyone is interested - I ended up getting the LG C8 (not a huge upgrade over the C7 but I couldn't help myself - my wife only lets me do these things once in a blue moon...)

Absolutely happy with the picture quality.   SD content looks average but can pretty much avoid that now.    Any decent picture looks fantastic - the 4K content on Netflix looks totally amazing (see Planet Earth II) but was really happy with plain old DVD content and normal resolution streaming - its upscaled really well.    And sport looks great too, including high speed motion like Wimbledon tennis balls....   Interface is good, remote with voice control works surprisingly well.  So overall really happy.

thanks for your post. I have an opportunity to buy an ex showroom C8 (only 100 hours use) at a really good price but my Samsung D8000 Plasma although 6 years old still puts out an amazing picture to my eyes.

my Sammy is 64" vs 65" OLED so size upgrade not worth it just wondering if anyone has upgraded from a quality to plasma to oled and if it is worth it.  4K right now is not really a factor , HDR etc also not really a factor right now.

I'm not a big believer in the possible burn-in issue with OLEDs but with a demo model that's something I would definitely check.   A solid single colour - red apparently shows it off best - so the opening graphics of a Marvel movie would work..

Outside of that - I don't know your Plasma so I can't really compare (I was coming from a 10 year old LCD) but I am loving my OLED picture quality even with just 720p - its upscaler must be pretty good.  Its is a bright room but reflections are not an issue.  If you stream netflix or similar and have decent bandwidth then 4K is accessible now - and growing.

I've still got the D8000 too and theres no chance I'd bother upgrading until it dies, great picture. I'm just keeping an eye on OLED for when it does die.

Thanks for the replies. I might just keep the d800 even though the $3500 I can get the C8 for is really tempting

How can you tell its only done 100 hours? Is there a menu which shows hours of use?

The contact who I can get it through has told me you can see hours of use in menu.

Ah ok, that's handy ?

3500 seems a pretty fair price for only 100hrs use.

I thought so might convince the wife that I'm saving $$$ by buying it and stashing it . My only dilemma is if as I expect my plasma to last another 3-4 years oleds will be cheaper by then

I saw some analysis saying they have dropped in cost by around 55% over the past 3 years - and will halve again by 2021.   But if you always applied this logic, no one would ever buy a new TV....

No tv’s.  That’d be awesome.  Imagine all the music we’d listen to....

Would be reading a few reviews  on this prior to purchase - full array local dimming fails to overcome contrast/black level shortcomings of IPS panel. Another LED 'flop' from LG.

Yep, not a stunner of a TV.Blacks appear greyish and the local dimming is mediocre (better than none, but only just).
For that money I'd MUCH rather the Sony X9000F or even Samsung NU8000.

the Sony X900F would appear to hit the 'sweet spot' for those requiring a decent LCD FALD TV at a reasonable price - saw a 65" version in JBs the other day for about $2900.   As a long time Samsung customer, it pains to see the overpricing in the QLED range - $4300 for a 65" (edge lit) Q7 is absurd and the FALD Q8 & Q9 are way overpriced IMHO.  The NU8000 is a better option for the budget buyer; decent screen uniformity and colour gamit despite the edge lighting.

Pity the TCL 6 series is not available in Australia; full array local dimming for the 65" version in the US for under a grand which equates to about $1800 in AU.
