Bass sounds great to be honest.

2 x 18" subs driven by Anthem M1 Monoblocks with the integration handled with a DEQX HDP-4; all in a 36mm Birch Pine Ply box.

That's a beautiful build and an impressive OB bass system. Thanks for sharing..

Here's my open baffle work in progress. I won't ever be able to go back to boxed speakers and while I'm on a mobile device and can't write extensively on it, I'd say DSP is almost essential. Positioning is very critical as is measuring to optimise balance. Nonetheless, no box at any price has ever gotten rid of boxiness in my experience either.

Nice - have alway thought about using an AMT with OB.

The Hawthorne AMT-500 is really wonderful as it is 15" wide and gives a very large life like sound. Plays from 40khz down to 500hz.

Just had to add my two bob's worth having just finished my third set of open baffles. The 8 Ohm bass/mid/tweeters and crossovers are the remains of some Focal in wall speakers that I picked up at Cash Converters whilst the 8 Ohm subs came courtesy of Gumtree and  which I connected via 125Hz 12db crossovers from DJ City. The panels are stock 1200 x 400 x 19mm timber bench top material from Bunnings. I got the holes CNC routed for me and finished off the rest with my own router. There was little science involved other to make them aesthetically pleasing and not prone to falling flat on their faces. When finished I connected them to my La Fontaine source and OAD amplifier and placed them in front of my Osborn Monuments and sat down to hear the result. To say I was somewhat blown away would be an understatement and for an hour or so the Monuments were on shaky ground. Common sense prevailed after switching back to the Monuments where it became clear that my ears had been playing tricks, nevertheless, it must have been the Focal 'house sound' that made them sound so nice. I wired the two 8 Ohm 12" subs in parallel to get 4 Ohms which I figured would sound louder using the solid state amp and give a small boost at the low end. As it turned out everything integrated especially well and with some minor positioning I couldn't have asked for more.

I demonstrated them at the Melbourne Audio Club annual DIY event a couple of days ago where they were given loud applause after each track and someone bought them on the night. I was amazed at their sound in the Willis Room (our monthly meeting venue) which has eaten up and spat out many hi-end systems in the past. I'm now thinking about my fourth set of OB's as I'm really convinced they're the way to go. BTW, there is a strut/divider behind the baffle which isn't shown here.

I can't quite get my mind around putting the bass speaker in a box as it seems to defeat the OB principle although obviously it does away with the bass cancelling out if at the expense of bass box sound. My latest solution of two bass drivers wired for 4 Ohms and solid state amp seemed to solve most of the bass issues in my room. With my previous OB build I used a single bass driver on each OB and wired a Visitron attenuator in the mid/tweeter section and then cranked up the power. That worked well too. The next OB project is going to be the ultimate solution and if it works I might be keeping them. I might also amplified arrangement to get the bass right.

That's it in a nutshell. Either you fork out a fortune for a lot of drivers to compensate for the bass roll off, or you pay the sound penalty.

Great job Dave.

Nice to see you progressing along the OB (the dark side?) path.

Will look forward to the next iteration, suggest that you look into some made for purpose bass drivers.

A DSP active system is also a worthwhile effort, albeit more expensive.

MiniDSP boards do come up for sale now and again on SNA, love mine, mainly just for the ease of adjustment of the crossover and equalization capabilities.

I now have a 15 inch driver for up to 80Hz and one from 80Hz to (EDIT 25Hz) 250Hz, made a big difference.

Have one driver for each frequency band, two driven in parallel did not do as good a job.

What are the dimensions of these please?

Russell.

Very very much for OB speakers .... as the driver corrections needed are often really impractical for a passive filter.

Here's an example from SL ....  talking about correcting an OB woofer response.

  Quote

Equalization of the dipole frequency response roll-off usually requires not only a 6 dB/oct boost towards low frequencies, but also removal of a peak in the response. (Models A2)  The three circuits differ in their ability to remove such peak.

Try even making filter A ..... let along making filter shape C (which is what you need) with a passive network!  ;)

Dimensions of front baffle are stock pieces of 1200 x 405 x 18, oiled Acacia from Bunnings at $27.00 per sheet. Probably too thin but Bunnings wouldn't cut the size I wanted and I didn't have the brains to go elsewhere. Bases were one sheet of the same cut in half. Brackets were from Bunnings and came painted black at about $6.00 each..

Do you know anywhere to get your hands on any more drivers from them? About to build a set with coax but would love to swap out the radian tweeter for amt... can't seem to find any though

I have the first pair of  AMT 700's that Darrel Hawthorne produced, along with the Danny Ritchie designed crossovers in my current SSI Trio's, but after some time I found myself preferring the sound of the Radian compression drivers, so have gone back to them. They are still in my current baffles, but I will probably remove them when I do a rebuild at some point.

It may just be my musical tastes that are the issue, I don't know.

I bought two spare AMT drivers (minus the horns) from him when he decided to stop selling them, just in case I had any failures in the future.

I also took the precaution of obtaining the passive crossover schematic before Darrel took it off the HA site.

I am running my HA Trio's with a Weston Acoustics KT 120 Topaz amp, Rythmik Audio A370PEQ plate amps and a 4x18" IB sub, if that is of any interest.

PM me if you want to discuss further.

Cheers,

Jim

Planning on building some DIY OB's later this year. I've all the parts here, just need the time.  Using vintage 50's and 60's alnico drivers from Zenith and Magnavox consoles along with some high efficiency bullet tweeters ;)

I've strayed from the OB path recently, but will return to the fold (literally) soon.

My latest attempt to beat my usual arrived today.

i already know they won’t.

Ive made several open baffle speakers all using the Warfedale RS/DD SUPERS  vintage 63 and 67.

I have matching woofers for the 67,s.

One pairt i used just the RS/DD SUPERS.

In the right room they are amazing.

The ones i have were sold as seperates for custom builders...the 63'

The 67,s i have came from a custom cabinet which had the woofers in them.

That combo sound good in a big room which i dont have.

Consider using a high quality  single driver there are loads of great vintage ones around...thar way you dont need a crossover...

Good luch....and its loads of fun building ones yourself.

Hi there,

I saw a presentation locally where the local guy did an analysis including measurements of the Mundorf AMT units, and found that the dipole units were technically better.

Well, I'm pretty happy how these are coming along.  My first (and probably last) effort building some open back speakers using Skar Audio VX1-ST super tweeters, 10" Zenith 49CZ Alnico full rangers and 15" Magnavox Alnico woofers. I'm rather hoping it works really well with a minimal first order crossover.

Once wiring is installed and it's all tweaked I'll put speaker cloth on the back to keep the baby out :)

Where are you in Melbourne? You can come to my place (Bonbeach) to hear how OB sounds.

Just PM me and bring some music ?

Or see my youtube videos ha..ha..

Mmmm, got them wired up tonight.  I'm never going back to box speakers. Sounds incredible with my little 0.5WPC Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL 3. The darTZeel NHB-108B copy is being sold.

Hello Matty

they certainly look great!

How close are they to the back wall, and in one case, the corner?

I always wondered if placement is more critical with this type of speaker.

Grant

A bit over a foot from the wall, and maybe 2 inches from the wall on the right. Balance seems fine, the only thing is a little more bass from the speaker in the corner.

I went with open back cabinet rather than open baffle as it should handle the lack of space better, and allow me to child proof otherwise it wouldn't have been worth doing.

I think I need to attenuate the super tweeter a bit as it seems a bit harsh. Likely a combination of factors:

1) It's a bullet compression tweeter

2) The caps have not burned in. The Miflex KPCU-1 used to bypass the KZK White Line on the tweeter is a copper foil type.  I usually find those bright until burned in.

3) Tweeters aren't burned in

I'll install an L Pad today and drop the levels of the super tweeter.  It'll be a good deal more pleasant then ;)

Matty are those kit speakers or something you built from scratch? Have you got any measurements of them?
