Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 Hi Lads, Just wanted to share this desktop bookshelf build I completed yesterday. The driver is full range Dayton Audio PS95-8 3".I flush mounted them in a Tasmanian Oak baffle and the rest of the enclosure is MDF with 2k Satin white that I got professionally spray painted. Overall they sound great and will work great with a small living room or on a desk etc. Pretty impressed with these drivers and the high frequency performed very well. I was able to get them to 72hz.I've found they image pretty well with an average record player and a Rotel 1095 120wpc amplifier that is bearly on with cheap phono and a custom made volume pot. I think the satin white looks great. Was going to go gloss white but I'm a real fan now of the satin. It feels lovely to touch and cant see any finger prints. Probably will sell them cheap as I have other bigger projects to move on to. 17
mwhouston Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 I'd love you to make my next speakers. They look great. Bloody good work. 1
Upfront Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 Very nice mate. Really well done. What's the plan for the next speakers? 2
Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 I'd love you to make my next speakers. They look great. Bloody good work. Yeah no problem mate. Hit me up in a PM.
Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 Very nice mate. Really well done. What's the plan for the next speakers? Thanks for the nice feedback. I'm pretty happy with them. The next build I've been working on for a few months now. They are a large Bookshelf. I will attach the test cab photos and crossover. But overall the test cab looks very different now. They are great value with amazing detail. Absolutely bang for buck. I also have an ultimate soundbar build for a friend to suit his living room. He was fairly restricted on options and let's face it there is no value in buying a soundbar from a joint like JBHIFI. I attached that photo below but his room is different to that but the 75" TV is what he has mounted on the wall. It's almost 1.5m wide lol. 1

Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 Peerless nomex cone 6.5"?Yep it's a good value build. Even in the test enclosures I was blown away with the detail of piano and guitar. Been getting stuck into 70s acoustic music lately. Generally it's a genre in the past I hadn't much time for but these speakers have me exploring all kinds of music. And that something I have never really experienced with my Kef Ci5160rl-thx that are 10k RRP for a pair. One song that blew me away was Kansas - Dust in the Wind. It randomly came on and I was on the computer and it grabbed my attention and made the hair on my neck stand. I also have a legitimate extreme bookshelf build lined up as well, but at the moment it's only based on theory and some rough cad drawings, it wont be cheap! I wont see much change out of 2.5k Eek.... mainstream speakers wont hold a candle too them but. Maybe 6k or 7k RRP speakers might compete with them IDK. 2
Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 Here is rough video recorded with my phone testing a Class D amp with that nomex bookshelf.http://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5b4b18947b1ad/VID_72710310_144448_876.mp4 1

Don't be afraid of spending the money if you've done your research. Nothing more satisfying than something you've laboured over, that sounds good. Nice cover work there too. 1

Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 Peerless HDS woofer and tweeter + waveguide. $15K retail speaker. [emoji106]What really? Is that Krix lol.I've tested the Vifa and Peerless versions and there is not much of a difference, if any. The former costs 2x more, the later comes out of china.I've found inductors are not worth the extra dosh and like wise resistors. Where things change is what you do with the caps! [emoji41]

No (not that I'm aware of), but plenty of $$$ speakers use these drivers. 8 minutes ago, Hatlesschimp said: I've tested the Vifa and Peerless versions and there is not much of a difference, if any. Maybe I'm confused :S 8 minutes ago, Hatlesschimp said: I've found inductors are not worth the extra dosh and like wise resistors. Where things change is what you do with the caps! They're all a PITA.... and to be avoided IMHO 1
Hatlesschimp Posted July 15, 2018 Author Posted July 15, 2018 They're all a PITA.... and to be avoided IMHO [emoji106] Your not one of those DSP lovers lol![emoji16]Hypex has some nice kit. Would love to use them in a studio monitor. But they are like $500 a pop. Idk the real prices or looked too much into them but from what I understand they make the best class D amplifiers. I just bought a 2ch x 300w Sure Electronics wondon amplifier board and was impressed with the build quality. Havent tested it yet. [emoji848][emoji16]
CamSemp Posted July 15, 2018 Posted July 15, 2018 They look great! What thickness MDF have you used? 1
davewantsmoore Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 13 hours ago, Hatlesschimp said: Your not one of those DSP lovers lol! I prefer to say "passive speaker level networks are a terrible design" .... and connecting an amplifier to each driver, and modifying the input signal to the amp, is a solution. Doesn't have to be DSP .... (DSP has it's own issues). 13 hours ago, Hatlesschimp said: Hypex has some nice kit. Yeah, I just received a big box of their new "Fusion" plate amps. They are quite nice. 13 hours ago, Hatlesschimp said: Would love to use them in a studio monitor. But they are like $500 a pop. $500 gets you: DAC, Amplifier, Crossover This seems like an amazing deal, even if the performance is only average .... but we're getting ncore amplifier modules, and quite good reclocking in the converter (you trade off the lack of FIR DSP, for the better reclocking scheme). I'm also tempted to throw them in a $1500 parts count bookshelf sized speaker..... but I'd need to sell it which isn't something I normally do. Maybe I'll post a project later this year (time poor). 3

At the moment I dont have enough time to learn new things with two toddlers lol. Also it's the sort of thing I would jump into and buy the wrong gear and waste money selling and rebuying. Keep me posted on how ya go.
Hatlesschimp Posted July 16, 2018 Author Posted July 16, 2018 They look great! What thickness MDF have you used? Thanks mate, yeah 18mm. It's a bit excessive but I wanted the cabinet to look bigger. Most of the stuff I build is either 18mm or 25mm. I have some surround speakers I made in 18mm but need to drop the thickness to make them lighter on walls for people, for me it's no problem because I have cross pieces between the studs for mounting all my surrounds. I might even switch to birch plywood. 1

hollowboy Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 I like the visual simplicity. Is there anything under the white paint? It might help to chamfer the driver holes. http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/chamfer.htm 1
