Tintin ES9038 DAC

I ordered the Ultimate version of this DAC after reading some good reviews. For around ¥2000 (under A$400) landed it seems like a well-implemented ES9038.

 

Built-in op-amps are four of the (Texas Instruments) LME49710 and two (Analog Devices) AD797.

 

(I presume the pair of AD797's are in the output/signal path and would benefit most from being upgraded? I have a couple of Burson V5i op-amps that are compatible).

 

Should be interesting to compare this to a few other budget DACs on my desk, including a Topping D50 (and a D30) and a basic ES90382QM circuit-board DAC with linear supply.

big fan of the bursons change the AD opamps and let us know how is goes.

there are a few discrete opamp replacement on ebay at the moment cheaper than the bursons but i’m not sure how good they are.

Thanks - yep, saw that one. This one also uses the 'Pro' chip.

 

(The designer's blurb is misleading because he hasn't edited out the previous info about his 9018 / 9028 DACs).

AD797 is single.

49710 are single as well

which is probably why they were matched together, must have found each other on tinder or something.

I wouldn’t pay money for low quality components and circuit such as this, D50 is miles away better in every aspect but I’m pretty sure you’ll find out yourself ?

Even in China are known designers/companies worth spending money on but this is not one of them...

You may be right; it's a risk buying something from an individual designer, although the components are not all low quality...

great for experimenting.

 

Great for opamp rolling....  plenty of room to swap out components.   I had a EE mini max dac plus when I 1st got onto SNA...    makes you aware of how different opamps can make a difference.    Also trial and error with different type PSU electrolytic with different ESR values.      Be interesting if you order without those super special psu diodes and then order a set of diodes from places like E14 and swap them out!   I’d personnally wouldnt use high speed diodes for full wave rectification but you never know until you try.

Breeze Audio ES9038Pro DAC

 

Thanks for the question. Because of shipping delays I ended up ordering the slightly more expensive, conventional version of this DAC (marketed through eBay, AliExpress and various other online retailers). It uses 2x single op-amps and 2x dual output op-amps. This one came with a pair of AD797 and Muses 8920's.

 

I use a coaxial connection via a usb-coaxial converter. 

 

The result is very good indeed. In fact, it's nearly up there with my Marantz SA11s2 spinner, and that's saying something. This extends to challenging genres such as classical music, where violins, piano etc are extremely well portrayed.  

 

Versus my Toppings (D30 and D50) it's in the next class up, with a more refined tonality and spacious presentation. It also displays the benefits of the dual transformers - better control at frequency extremes etc.

 

Not that I'm criticising the Toppings - I have the D30 in another setup and I really enjoy it.
