betty boop Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 Some will remember the original pana lumix lx100, its something I had for some years as was a very handy every day use kind of camera for walk around use. eg while on holidays. packing a m43 sensor which is a step up from the 1" or smaller sensors you usually get on most compact cameras. also packing a reasonably bright f1.7-2.8 lens in a useful 24-75mm focal length zoom. Similarly for camera enthusiasts (very much like on the fuji x100f) it has dials to quickly select and see in one glance what key settings like aperture/shutter speed are and also control exposure to under or over expose. Good news is the MkII refresh sticks with a same form factor so still just pocketable. same zoom lens and dials. but after some years now packs a new sensor (believed to be same as Gx9) and that is cropped slightly in use here. Also updated here are the back screen which is more current gen in resolution and thank fully now a touch screen. what else is new ? new colour science to improve on what lumix originally used. the auto focus system is much improved with more current gen. you can also charge the camera via its usb port which is useful when travelling. Plus the wireless connectivity has been brought upto date which is good as the original was a touch dicky... otherwise pretty much the winning formula it was. which is pity in some case eg the EVF should have been updated as four years later things have moved on with many using OLED and such. What the updates have done though is kept the camera punching well above any other compact "pocketable" camera in equivalent aperture for instance https://www.dpreview.com/opinion/3724820478/why-i-m-delighted-to-see-an-lx100-ii with nothing else really even coming close giving it some excellent lattitude with depth of field none of these can match. in some ways this is a fuji x100f alternative for those looking for something similar with the dials and relatively large sensor but with a large aperture zoom. dpreview has a good first impressions below, which am sure they'll expand to a full review at some stage, https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-dc-lx100-ii 1
Guest Posted August 25, 2018 Posted August 25, 2018 The Panasonic LX10 and LX100 cameras are indeed good. However, I think they are being "sandwiched" by the relatively high price, the M43 cameras (which has the same sensor) and the lack of prestige ala Leica cameras (even though they sport Leica lenses). It is a camera aimed at an enthusiast who want the controls, a decent lense and a small footprint. I have a feeling this market is shrinking ?

I have a feeling this market is shrinking ? dont know snoopy looks like it keeps the $1k price had before. and pana stuff attracts massive mark downs. and smartphones which people often use instead of compact cameras are only getting more and more expensive well past the $1k mark. in PQ the M43 still fits well above smart phones which are more sub 1" sensor category if looking to use as holiday cams. so cameras like this still got some life in them. as smart phones get better the 1" sensor cameras will get knocked off... and I think thats pretty close to now. so m43 will be next in the phone makers sites but might take a few years yet. you cant fit a m43 in a phone or have the kind of optics the lx100 sports on a phone so still leaves a good option for those wanting something more than on a phone for taking pictures but you are quite right its aimed at the enthusiast with the dials and such who are wanting to play with aperture and shutter speed and looking for that bit extra. that I dont think a shrinking space
kukynas Posted December 3, 2018 Posted December 3, 2018 nearly bought the LX100II but than found crazy offer for RX100VA so couldn't resist and decided to take Sony, of course it's nowhere near APS-C or FF in low light but overall for my actual needs better than my phone with excellent video quality and that's what my goal was btw. are you still Al or should I call you betty now
