If an AV receiver cost say $1000, what is a reasonable price drop after 1,2,5 , 10 years ?

i would have thought at least 20% per year?

Eg $750 after 1 year , $600 2nd yr, $300 after 5 yrs ?

just wondering ? As I see some people advertising on Facebook and gumtree for basically new prices and an item is 1-2-5 years old  with no warantee. Are sellers really expecting to sell for what they bought it for? I suppose the ones I see still for sale are the ones that are priced too high ....

eg $1000 HT ( hdmi , 4K switching , etc ) receiver after 4 years , what would  you think it’s market price ?

Maybe FB is full of folk that have no idea on the value of used audio equipment. Those advertised on FB are dreaming, and are they even selling? I guess some might sell because the buyer has no idea *shrug*

As far as what that receiver might fetch, it depends on the model and what features it has. Have to consider that after 4 years a HT Receiver might not have newer features that most are looking for when looking to buy.

One model might hold It's value better than another that is similar, made by the same company, lots of variables in how much any piece of kit might be worth used.

I can't suggest a price myself, sorry I can't help with that.

yes definitely depends on the individual model, advances in tech, availability of buyers and sellers knowledge of the 2nd hand market. basically the same as selling anything. research is, as usual, important.

ie yamaha rxa3040 was $3000 new not all that long ago.. try getting $1000. thats because it is first gen "atmos" only. try selling a pre atmos unit, they may be made in japan and as heavy as a tank but does the market want them?

if you have a unit for sale just stick it on and see what you are offered, you dont have to sell it if the offers are not what you want. as long as you understand all these 2nd hand prices are what the seller wants and you will not know what they actually get. well unless its an auction situation and some of those may be b.s. anyway.

if you feel an item is going to be outdated soon then sell it soon (if you were going to replace it anyway)

Nope, they are dreaming, and wasting everyone's time.

It hits 60% as soon as it goes out the retailer's door.

Half price after 12 months, unless it's been in a box all that time, in which case 2/3 normal retail, or 50% of retail if retail is on runout.

30% after 5 years (audio) or 3 years (audio-visual), unless major technological change, eg format shift, in which case 20%, or highly fashionable or collectable, in which case maybe 40%. Most dreamers think their gear is in this latter category.

Edited to add: the parts value is usually about 10% of retail. eg $5k headphone amp = $500 of parts including that lovely designer case.

What I've said isn't true in all cases, but is true enough to help as a guide.

Thirdrawerdown It does seem like a lot of gumtree and Facebook sellers are asking too much, or maybe they didn’t haggle and paid too much when they bought them new ?

i am looking at getting a HT amp, maybe 2nd hand denon 2100 - hdmi, 4K , Atmos, etc and looking at paying for a new HT amp new or maybe 400-600 for 2-4 year old unit. If the price isn’t much cheaper second hand why bother. I also see various denons get posted cheap on sale on ozbargain from overseas amazon at times
