Willy71 Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 Hey all been looking but I can't find. Can anyone direct me to any to a post or anything about good upgrade p mount cartridges Technics in particular Cheers
zippi Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I used to run a p-mount but lack of carts / unpopularity of T4P with manufacturers made me switch when it came to an upgrade. It's frustrating and hard to understand as I reckon P-mount is a far superior (actually standardised) solution than a standard cart. Audio Technica have some inexpensive elyptical stylus P-mounts (sub $100) as a good/decent stop-gap, but that's all they are: -AT92E and https://www.amazon.co.uk/Technica-AT3482P-Phonograph-Cartridge-P-Mount/dp/B002OSWGLW Also these forums below have a tonne of info, but compared to alternative mount - choices are thin on the ground. https://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=61623 http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/best-p-mount-cartridge.244560/ http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/p-mount-cartridges.575791/ Might be lucky with a fleabay search: https://www.ebay.com/bhp/p-mount-cartridge good luck mate! 2

You may have a tough time getting a better sound - a retip might be a better path. See also this listing in our SNA classifieds :

The challenge is that the best P Mounts are vintage - new P Mount cartridges do no match the quality of what was available in the past. This means scouring ebay, and taking the risk on old cartridges. But here are a few I have used: Technics 310MC - wonderful boron cantilevered low output moving coil. Very neutral sound with sweet and clean top end. Technics P22/ 202 - boron cantilevered moving magnet - fast, clean and detailed sound. Technics P23 - moving magnet - decent quality cartridge, not the most detailed or interesting sound. Sony XL MC10 - high output moving coil - detailed sounding, although I found it a little too polite. Audio Technica AT92E - moving magnet, Actually a real bargain, and worth just having on hand as a regular listen. I used all of the above on a Technics SL7, although, I wasn't convinced the SL7 was doing justice to them all, particularly the 310MC. Lots of other gems out there, including P205C MK4 you have pictured (which would be one of the best), the Shure V15P, the Empire P mounts (including an MC?), the Ortofon OM P mount range, which you can theoretically mount a high end stylus on, and several Audio Technica P mounts with advanced stylus profiles. Happy searching! 1

MattyW Posted October 1, 2018 Posted October 1, 2018 Something that's a little easier to come by are the Pickering and Stanton P mount cartridges, such as the L727 or L737. P mount versions of the Pickering XV15 / Stanton 680/681. A wonderful cart and the available Jico shibata styli are better than a kick in the teeth. 2
