@lowpoke

To me mass damping is about special devices strategically designed to control the movement of an object, building, component etc.  That is what the toppers or AMGs are about.  I do not understand how just a weight on its own will be beneficial as it would just move in the same directions as the speaker enclosure.  In fact, it could exacerbate any problem.

I also do not understand what would influence an amplifier to move backwards, forwards, sideways or any way such that the movement could be controlled.  Therefore, what are you trying to control with your suggestion and more importantly with what control devices?  I am quite interested as it may be something I could try.

I've awoken from a slumber... I can answer this one.

I do know mass loading is a great way to control vibrations. F = m*a, so more mass (m) equals less acceleration (a), or velocity or displacement for that matter. This is with regards to equal force. Voila!

Also, yes, tuned absorbers, like the toppers, can increase vibrations if tuned incorrectly. That's right, they are not a one size fits all.

It does then beg the question.  Why aren’t toppers seen commonly atop high end speakers?  If they make that much of an audible difference, then why would manufacturers not use them commonly, perfectly tuned to the cabinets they create?

most decent speaker manufacturers design their speakers where toppers are not required - otherwise the speaker is flawed.

There are many flawed speakers, most if not all of them.

Could this small but seemingly important design detail have eluded most speaker manufacturers? Should we alert them to this thread, so they can finally start making decent speakers?

Do you think they are not decent?
