Hi,

I auditioned a pair of Proac Sc1s in Melbourne a few months ago was so impressed I nearly bought them on the spot. They're a terrific little speaker to my ears. Great understated sound. But full bodied too.

The Sc1s have been superceded by the supposedly bassier D1s for a while now of course, but I haven't been able to audition these as no store I know stocks them. It's very hard to find any information about ProAcs so if anyone owns a pair of D1s I'd appreciate the feedback.

I'd also appreciate any advice about possibly pairing a bass speaker with a smaller speaker for extra base. I'm led to believe is something you can do. Good/bad idea? I listen to fair bit of bass and I'd hate to damage the small ProAc.

I'm off to the UK for a holiday soon so will probably pick up a set over there given they retail for half the price. I'd prefer to support hi-fi shops here, but $2000 is too much of a price difference for the one component.

If it's relevant, I'll be teaming what I buy with an Arcam cd37 cd player and Denon PMA1510AE amp. I bought both of these recently locally.

The wildcard is the D2. Any info about this larger speaker would be great too?

I have not heard the D1 or D2, but I am thoroughly in love with the 1SC's. ProAc has a history of bringing out other speakers which are supposedly superior to the Response 1's, but all have failed to make much of an impact - which is why they keep updating the original design every few years.

It is a good idea to pair a subwoofer to fill out the missing bottom end of the 1SC. How much success you have depends more on your skill in making the two sing together than anything else.

If you are going to the UK, why not send Stewart Tyler an email and try to arrange a visit to the ProAc factory at Northinghamshire? :D Stewart might be a legend, but he answers emails personally. I still have an email from him where he told me off when I asked what he thought of a particular modification ... :)

I own a pair of 1SC's and had a home demo of the D2 very recently. I just found the 1SC's to have the more engaging sound. The D2 did sound fuller and weightier but did not seem to have the magic of the 1SC's. Something about very small speakers that punch above their weight. The D2's are so big and cumbersome I was expecting more from them somehow.

For relatively small rooms the 1SC's get my wholehearted recommendations. If your room is medium sized then the D2's would no doubt do a better job of filling it with the 'Proac' signature sound...

Hi, Like I stated in earlier Posts --the ProAc Carbon 6's were the best speakers --period- I heard at CES this year--I am going to RMAF next week in Denver --and I doubt there will be anything better.

Yes buy ProAc

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I'll go with the Response D1s as the Sc1s are pretty much out of stock now. The one store in the UK I can find that still sells them are asking £1395, the same the D1s are selling for.

Most reviews if they are to be believed say their isn't much difference between the two speakers. The D1 is at least as good as the Sc1, possibly a smidgen better, apparently.

Keith, have you ever paired a particular sub woofer with a pairs of Sc1s?

Hi display, I have never owned a pair of 1SC but I know many people who have run Response 1's, Tablettes, and the like. So the answer is no - I have never attempted a pairing myself but I have heard a DIY sub paired with a DIY Response 1. At the time I thought that there was real potential in it once a few rough edges were cleaned up.

If you found a store with 1SCs and D1s, you have the opportunity to perhaps audition them side by side with identical source gear. Says a lot for the 1SCs that they still retail at the same price as the updated model.

I have some 1sc clones (of course not as good as the real thing by any means, but probably a similar spectrum of sound) and made a 10" sub to go with it. Balancing the sound was very tough - even with measuring instruments I found the best sound was to set a low crossover (about 45hz) with low volume. It just adds a little bit more weight to the sound and some of those lower notes come through clearer. With that that said, it is by no means necissary, and probably less so with the real 1sc's

The real 1SC's still need some bass reinforcement to my ears. If used in your main system and you listen to a variety of musical genres the supplementation from a good sub will bring even further musical enjoyment. Used in my second system for quiet, late night listening I do not feel the need though. They are by no means lean sounding if used in moderate sized rooms.

I have owned / heard both in my own system , which is basically tube based .The 1SC's ,by along shot r the superior speaker here .ProAc are effectively in a quandrey!

Trying to push the new D model's . Or having to resell the aready iconic Response model's.

Especially the R 1sc , which is like trying to replace the ls3/5a .. It just will not work . The D1 is Ok , the D2 is better ... so if you have a smallish room & running valves go the 1SC's. But if slightly larger than 3m2 then definitley go for the D2"s .... Cheers Scotty C Audio freak 4 over 20 yrs ..!

My experience is with the older line up. I own and use regularly Tablette 8s, Response 2s and Response 3s.

I have spent a bit of time listening to the 1SC. They are all gorgeous speakers and all with a similar "signature", but as the cabinets get bigger you get more weight to the music. I wouldn't say "bassier", just more presence. How much do you want to spend? If you can find a used pair of Response 2s they will give you everything the 1SC has with more presence.

(And really, you can't go wrong with any of them.)

Bear in mind that his post is from 2010. You simply won't find new 1SCs for audition anywhere as they are long discontinued.
