Not sure if this is better in another subforum, so please feel free to move.

I have several boxes of CDs that are never used since I went all digital with Sooloos and Roon. I'm looking at reducing their volume.

A few years ago I saw some CD sleeves, but they weren't like the ones you use for software backups etc. They were made so they had space for the cover/ booklet as well as the CD. Not sure if they had the back cover as well. I thought this was a great idea but I can't think what to search for.

Can anyone remind or direct me?

@Mr_Gimlet

I was looking into this issue just the other day. These were the ones I found.

http://www.bagsunlimited.com/product/3317/cd-gatefold-sleeve-center-loadingbrtray-card-and-booklet-in-one-side-cd-in-the-otherbr4-mil-polyethylene

Customer service got back to me with shipping costs, roughly USD81 for 500 and USD126 for 1000. Assuming 10% gst on the way in, that roughly equates to 48c per sleeve landed for 500, or 40c per sleeve landed for 1000. I hadn't yet made up my mind to buy or actually checked how many i needed, and was intending to look for a cheaper option as well.

How many CDs have you got that it would trigger GST!

No idea.... I just thought all imports had GST on them now, as I haven't bought anything since the new regime came in 1 July

No GST until 1k, unless you buy from ebay amazon etc

Let me know how the cheaper hunt goes, I need to do a stocktake to get numbers. But might be cheaper to pool and split if we get to that point

I have ordered over 800 sleeves by the mob that @Mr_Gimlet linked too, but that was around 3 years back. I recall postage was a killer. Did it over 2 orders.

But I love the product, have majority of my cd collection stored, and I can store 2 albums in the 1 sleeve, as pictured in example below.

The only minor downside is I had to then buy paper sleeves locally for the actual disc.

The beauty of it too is that (if I put 2 albums in one sleeve) it saves a heap of space. 22 albums stored in 11 sleeves equals 4 standard CD’s in the typical plastic cases, thickness wise on shelf.

Sounds like a plan. I'll do a stocktake as well

Not sure this helps but it is local, if you are in Melbourne.

At the price of 0.50+GST per it is not cheap and they do not do volume discounts.

I'm looking for sleeves but only for my digipak CDs, of which I seem to have a growing number.

Thanks Paul - I think these are a slightly different thing as you maintain the hard plastic shell but put it into the sleeve. i was looking for something to replace the shell

I haven't used them but, as far as I can tell, these are the old jazz loft sleeves which I have seen recommended before. Not sure if they are identical to the bags unlimited ones posted above. Certainly look similar to soundfan's.

@markm1111 Mrs g has just remind me about this so I am about to go shopping. What did you end up doing?

Sorry Mr G, haven't got anywhere with it myself yet. Got side-tracked on other things. A task for the next couple of months

Yes, me too, except I got forcefully reminded. I'm just waiting for Bags to get back to me with updated shipping costs.

If anyone following the thread wants to piggy back my order and split shipping, drop me a PM.

Great idea, think I may head down the same path. I think twice before buying CD’s these days, no room to store them all.

If you go to CD Japan.com you will find they sell a range of CD/DVD accessories (inner sleeves and outer sealable covers) produced by a company called NAGOAKA. They are really great quality and postage to Australia is reasonable. The covers are of all sorts of sizes to cater for the different CD case dimensions out there.

@075CongoDo you mean CDJapan.co.jp? I can't find the sleeves (swamped by 'no sleeves' items, do you have a direct link?

Yes sorry! www.cdjapan.co.jp or just google CD JAPAN. On home page  click on "Music" then scroll down the menu to the very bottom "Accessories" and you will see the CD Covers. Postage is typically Japanese ; everything is packed in "green paper" and then put in a bullet-proof cardboard box. Minimum postage is 500 yen (about 7AUD). I have bought lots of stuff from them and never a problem. They even sell second-hand SACD/CD sourced from Japanese collectors. Sorry to rant on.

Cheers

Any updates on sourcing these gatefold CD cases? Ripping and moving to files just hasn't worked for me.

There seems to be 3 sources, but has anyone found the postage rates for Bags Unlimited? Or alternate ebay or local sources?

Hi Mr G. Did you end up doing anything on this? If so, which sleeves did you go for, and are you happy with them?

I am about to to start re-ripping all my cds, so want to put them into storage at the same time. Hence, I am definitely going to buy. I have updated the costs with Bagsunlimited. 500 units USD155 shipped. 1000 units USD259 shipped. Unfortunately the exchange rate hasn't been friendly, so it works out at roughly 40c per sleeve for 1,000, 48c per sleeve for 500 units, assuming a rate of 1AUD=0.65USD. I have also assumed no gst on import.
