Speakers are too personal. I've heard mixed reviews of the older version Dyn's but see if you can demo both in the same room and trust your own ears and taste. If using Roon or PC as a source their are also ways to implement DSP to help overcome room issues. There are so many choices in this field now it's great.
GGoOrz Posted October 17, 2018 Author Posted October 17, 2018 If I was in Melbourne I would definitely have a look at Osborn Speakers. There are also Krix, Richter or Tiny Maxwell (Maudio). Kef looks really cool. PMC twenty5.21. Hey Irek, I had a chance to tryout the twenty5.21. Amazing but just a bit out of my budget with everything else together.
Irek Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 If you really like PMC twenty5.21 than there is no point to go below. If you go with something cheaper few months later you'll think about upgrade. PMC are $4000 RRP (negotiable), I heard them with rega brio and Kef cannot compete with them for sound quality. For wireless DAC/wifi entry level there is Yamaha WXAD-10 for around $220. 2

POV Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Elac is about to go into production with a new active speaker called the navis I believe. imho anything Kef can do Elac can do better. 1
alistairm Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Hard to find, but if you can get turn up a pair of Adam Tensor Deltas they are proper high end and ridiculously cheap: I agree with the earlier post in that I think it is difficult to match the audio quality of well designed active speakers with separates in this price range, although if course that is a general statement not a definitive one. 3
Frameperfect Posted October 21, 2018 Posted October 21, 2018 At the 3k point I would firmly be in the passive camp. But since this is for a bedroom, maybe there are space or heat considerations. Still, a small Class D amp like a Nord paired with a pair of bookshelf speakers would give you a wide range of options, on time and under budget. If you're committed to actives check out the Elac AIR-X 403. I havn't seen one pop up used though, but I heard it when I was buying some gear awhile back and it really impressed. When I heard that new Kii speaker the other day I thought back to the Elac, with its clear, powerful sound that seemed to be impervious to any distortion, even at ear melting volume. Good luck.

Guest Eggcup The Daft Posted October 22, 2018 Posted October 22, 2018 The latest KEF, the R3 does play closer to the PMC mentioned here, if we are discussing passive speakers in the given price range. I'd also recommend hearing the Legend Kurre (the considerably more expensive Small Red is a really good active standmount speaker) and the Osborn Eos Reference which is insane value for money. I shouldn't forget the VAF i-91 or the various Lenehans. The latter models are all Australian, and generally (objectively) better value for money than imports (though of course your listening could decide differently). Actives are somewhat rarer at the $3K price point. Apart from the KEF already mentioned most of them are either around $2K, or more expensive. Since you have to standmount most of these speakers, don't forget small standmounts as an alternative. I believe there's an active DALI at $2K which should also be on your list of active models.
Tone Malone Posted November 9, 2018 Posted November 9, 2018 I'll tell you one thing, if an interior designer ever gets to go through your house and provide furniture options, you'll wish you had gone active. The one who advised us coneniently assumed the existing one was empty

Festooned Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 (edited) I think he means that passive systems take up more space or need their own furniture. I vote for passive simply because I don't like to go begging for amplifier modules or parts or be told they're discontinued when the outsourced company the manufacturer used moves on and the warranty is over. the LS50s are popular but the warranty on the active ones are a lot shorter.. (why?). It's not inconceivable that once the warranty goes you'll be out of luck for repair - at least in some localities - and whether the consumer support organisations we have here will step in and help in that case I'd be interested to know. Take a look at the most common active speaker design - the subwoofer - and notice how many fancy Class D ones (including respected brands like Dynaudio) go begging, broken because they're out of warranty and no-one can repair them.
