jtfoto Posted November 2, 2018 Posted November 2, 2018 Just fortunate enough to pick up a pair of JBL TLX8 speakers at a ridiculous price. All surrounds are in great condition as are the cabinets. I will probably have to go over the cross-overs. Is there anyone out there using these. If so what are your impressions. Is there anything else I should be looking to go over. Cheers guys
5L15 Posted November 2, 2018 Posted November 2, 2018 Hi jtfoto, What amp are you using? How do you like the sound of the speakers? I find moderately priced JBL’s sound nice with 25+ watts of NAD amplifiers, just my experience. Also you might want to look into improving the bracing in the cabinets too... 5L15 1
jtfoto Posted November 2, 2018 Author Posted November 2, 2018 I just gave them a run and they sound far better than expected. I was very pleased to see that all the driver surrounds were in really good condition. Almost made the think that they may have been replaced in the past though that does not look the case. I am driving them with a restored vintage Onkyo amp at 80wpc and fed with a Halcro EC800 CD player. I will check out the crossover caps etc tomorrow and will probably re-cap them. The cabinets do seem a little flimsy so I might take your advice 5L15 and look at some extra bracing. Cheers.
5L15 Posted November 2, 2018 Posted November 2, 2018 Awesome, I hope you have a lot of fun with your system now and into the future!
jtfoto Posted November 12, 2018 Author Posted November 12, 2018 Well I rebuilt the crossovers with dayton caps and new resisters. what a difference. For an outlay of $50 for the pair plus about $30 for parts, I am very pleased with their sound. When you have a limited budget for sound gear it's nice to have a bit of a win for a change.
Miguel Posted November 8, 2021 Posted November 8, 2021 I just found a pair of JBL TLX8 too! The grilles are cat damaged and need new cloth, but otherwise they look to be in excellent condition. I was wondering how the sound changed when you rebuilt the crossovers, and if I should attempt this myself. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, but never worked on any hifi components. I wouldn't know where to go for parts, except Radio Parts or Jayco. Any advice? Also, how do you know if the surrounds are ok? Mine seem soft and pliable, so presumably they are ok? Thanks!
