A must have for any on this forum is some equipment to play music with or on, or perhaps a surround set-up for movies and TV watching. 'OBVIOUSLY'

The last 'new' bit of gear I bought was a PVR (DVD recorder- HD STB- HDD) and it gets the most use in my house. There isn't much talk of these things here, but they do a great job of storing your CD collection and replayed through a 2 channel set-up they sound great

To me it is "A Must Have"

Is there a sub forum on PVR's ?

For those with a sub in particular, I'd say a basic measurement setup - mic + preamp so you can make PC measurements and at the very least find the best spot for your sub. A must have for bass nuts like myself.

i do a similar thing to you with your PVR Grumpy, mine is soted on a hard drive then accessed directly buy the AVR, not really streaming, but doesnt fit anywhere else. Its so simple and sounds pretty damn good.

for me the latest must have was Tube stuff. I had to see what the rage was about, tried a valve phono and loved it, not loving the valve amp. Valab NOS DACS were in the DAC list for awhile. I had one and cant say i liked it that much

We've had one of these for years now Grumps, but I've never figured it would be good for 2 channel playback............will have to give it a go and see how it sounds. I've actually never used it, but I bought it for Dale so she could record her shows she likes to watch.

Cheers,

Keith

I have mine set-up to play through both systems Keith. A/V and the stereo . I use the coax digital out from the PVR to the A/V receiver and a set of RCA's from the PVR out to my 2 channel pre-amp. It's sounds great to my ears, track 12 Three Wishes from the Roger Waters 'Amused to Death' CD sounds bloody awesome.. I have the full menu of the CD on screen also.

MEMO to Self; I must load more music onto the PVR

Actually there is a very interesting new audio technology called Ambiophonics. It uses DSP to make 2 channel setups work more like headphones. With headphones each ear only hears the signal intended for that ear. With 2 channel setups, the left ear also hears sound from the right channel and vice versa - crosstalk. Ambiophonics uses DSP to eliminate that effect - apparently the result is incredible holographic imaging. I first came across it fairly recently here:

You can get one version of this technology from the same people who make MiniDSP, so I expect it would also be very cheap.

I haven't heard it yet, but curiosity may well get the better of me. What I wonder is whether this is a serious upgrade to conventional 2 channel or simply a novel effect.

That's funny Paul, some headphone amps (like my Meier amp) have a setting to increase crosstalk between the left and right channels. The result is ... more natural imaging.

Show have called the thread "Can't have's"...because everything I would like has too many zero's.

Phono Stages seem to be getting a bit of air time lately. The F117 Nighthawk comes to mind!

Very similar to what I do Grumps, I don't have a PVR (yet) but I have my digital music stored on a 1TB HDD plugged into a western digital HDTV via USB then my setup is as yours, optical out to HT receiver and analogue to 2 channel amp. A neat solution. I also have a second HDD for moving picture storage as the HDTV has 2 USB inputs.

Latest fads, hmm streaming and DACs plus anything with too many numbers before the decimal point in it's price.

It's $150. If it's a serious upgrade it's pretty good value for money

A new Apple Mini to replace the one I turned into a paperweight within 30 mins of getting it home from the Apple shop. After all the excitement I stuffed it while trying to fit a new drive. Great investment AJ - phew

They are also forgetting 2ch is mixed for 2 speakers and not headphones. You would need biaural (?) recordings for this DSP to work I would think. Why mess with what the engineer has put in?

My headphone amp also has the crosstalk setting which I use all the time.

DIY active speakers using digital crossovers seem to be rising in popularity thanks to the pioneers on this forum.

miniDSP is generating a lot of chatter at the moment due to its high feature set and low cost.

I missed some replies ...

Interesting. Perhaps by more natural they mean more like normal speakers. I generally prefer listening to speakers and a room to headphones, but I've never really heard good headphones. Headphones take me back to being a teenager. I remember that 80s song "I wear my sunglasses at night" which sounded cool on headphones.

Trevor,

Thing is I don't know what to make of it. Not sure if it's a gimick, novelty or something that could be used seriously.

Apparently you don't need a binaural recording at all. The argument is that it brings you closer to what was put in. A little test (which I haven't yet tried) is to put a mattress between the speakers to do it acoustically.

The only must have for me is fun.Whether it be from a new bit of equipment or some new components to replace the inexpensive line fit stuff ,I want to get more enjoyment out of my music.

Let's see I now have cd via a 16bit Nos dac. Streaming via an Ac Ryan medatank with a TB of onboard storage, which also plays wav and flac from SD cards and feeds a 24bit .192khz dac for high res files and by the end of this year I will have an enry level Sondek up and runing for my 100 or so Lp's ( thanks in part to the genorosity of several SNA members.)

You don' have spend megabucks to enjoy your music imho :party
