A while ago I came across some vintage Richard Allan CG10T wide range drivers. They have cast frames with a hammer tone paint finish, have a paper main cone and paper whizzer cone, and a doped cambric surround. The voice coil is on a paper former. Some of the drivers I had were damaged (paper former bubbled & scraping) but I ended up with two good pairs, in good condition.

Today I finally got around to putting them into some old cabinets to see how they performed. I’m just running a lightning DAC/adapter for the iPhone 7 straight into the back of an 8 watt Pass ACA amp, so nothing fancy.

These speakers are seriously good!! Being wide range, coherence, imaging and “there-ness” is excellent, and depth of sound stage is excellent too. They really make you want to listen to music.

There are some down points. High frequencies roll off a little but not excessively so, I’m not wanting to put a tweeter into the cabinets. There is a little peak somewhere in the upper frequencies which shows itself on poorly recorded material, but is generally fine on well recorded material. They are not perfect, but they are very, very good.

I plan to build some decent cabinets for these as they are definitely worth the effort. If anyone else comes across a pair, grab them and give them a go, you will probably be very pleasantly surprised. They are a speaker one could live with for a long time. ?

Cheers,

i had a pair of Leak sandwich 600 speakers and the tweeter , the voice coil was on paper and was blistered, i manager to unbolt the magnet and use a scalpel to slice of the bubble off the voice coil and realign the speaker back to working order, i'm not sure if any other speaker has the ability to unbolt the magnet from the rest of the speaker, but yous definitly sound like a good find

Argh yes those were the days, I had the CG12 Supers myself and built  a 3 way sealed system from plans provided by Richard Allen. The mid range was done with a 8" RA driver, high range done with a Kaltro Tweeter and all connected to a RA made cross over box. The speakers box itself was made from 25mm veneered chipboard making for a heavy cabinet. And yes for the late '60s it was right up there then.
