Agree with @metal beat on the latest from City Calm Down - I liked In A Restless House but to me, Echoes in Blue is a step or two better musically. The Underground Lovers album is also excellent!

I would have to give them a few more listens. :)

Do you have one for loan Greg?

* I mean not the cheap one * [emoji4]

P.S. I forgot to mention I just had my broken Shelter rebuilt by Soundsmith. Just had it back a couple of months ago and sounding even more glorious. :)

Haha, not with the rate at which you play records, Max!

Top shelf now empty - they’re all on arms doing their stuff! Bottom shelf has a few spares but a bit lo-fi for your fine ears!?

Max, are you going to the City Calm Down gig at the Metro next month? If so, would be good to catch up for a beer before the show!

I really like Rival Consoles. I agree that the new album doesn't "flow", but I find most of Rival Console's music doesn't flow, but I dont mind that - maybe that's the nature of it (or my interpretation?).

Anyways, the limited edition version of Persona arrived late last week:-

< Boomkat Product Review:

First solo album in 5 years, recorded, produced and written by Richard H. Kirk, founding member of Cabaret Voltaire, the album was constructed at Western Works, Sheffield, over a three-year period.

"Work began with recording on midi and analogue synthesisers before guitar and vocals (Kirk’s first use of vocals in 10 years) were added. Kirk explains, “A lot of time was spent on post-production, editing and then living with the material and I think it benefited from stepping back and then revisiting after doing other things.”

Although not an overtly political album, it’s hard not to hear a reaction to recent years’ world events in the overwhelming urgency of ‘Nuclear Cloud’ or ‘20 Block Lockdown’ or in ‘New Lucifer / The Truth Is Bad’. When questioned Kirk admits, “It’s not really a political album, but over recent years – during the recording – all manner of horrorshow events have cropped up and now we seem to be in a rerun of the Cold War with Russia back as the Bogeyman.” The album’s title, Dasein (a German word meaning “being there” or “presence”, often translated into English as “existence”), is a fundamental concept in existentialism.

Kirk explains “culture succumbs to nostalgia in much the same way that an individual looks back wistfully to adolescence or childhood - the nostalgia is partly for a time when he or she wasn’t nostalgic, just lived purely IN THE NOW.” In 2014, during the recording period, Kirk began work on Cabaret Voltaire live and so the two projects coexisted in tandem. Although Kirk’s varied projects have always existed separate to one another, says Kirk, “in the past some solo works served as a blueprint for what I did later with Cabaret Voltaire”.

Billed as a performance consisting solely of machines, multi-screen projections and Richard H. Kirk, Cabaret Voltaire recently announced the first UK performance in over 20 years at the Devil’s Arse Cave (aka Peak Cavern) in Castleton, Derbyshire on Saturday 29 April. Kirk will perform entirely new material for a performance relevant to the 21st Century with no nostalgia." >

Hi Geoff,

I really like a lot of your 'finds', have to give this a whirl. Now spinning some early 70's Oz electronica:

There's over 450 mixes available there ... including ones from The Orb, etc. Plenty more listening ahead ...

On my first listen I am slightly disappointed. While I think it's a good album, quite a few tracks felt too much like Immunity 2.0 but without the excitement of Immunity.

The SQ is good but I felt that it is not as good as Immunity, though I haven't played Immunity for comparison. However, it is a nice and quieter pressing. I went through 3 copies to get a copy of Immunity which is listenable.

I'll see if I like it a bit more after a few spins.

same here.
I got caught in the hype for a bit. Then I had a listen on the big system, although I did enjoy it, I found some tracks were so similar to previous work it took the shine off a little. I quite enjoyed the last few tracks which is softer / mellow. Good album but not at the same level of enthusiasm for me.

I'm assuming that you guys have all heard Max Cooper's work. It's much more driven than Jon Hopkins stuff but there are some similarities in "feel".

Hey Guys.  I'm pretty new to this thread.  I've been through the Vinyl, through the Metal and Rock CD's, now I'm moving into the Electronic, Techno, House and all things in between CD's.  I have quite a few Albums (cd), but mostly Compilations and DJ Mixes.   I changed jobs in 1996 and entered the Hospitality Industry, kitchen hand and cooked for ten years.  It was my introduction to House Music and Clubbing.  I worked in a gourmet pizza restaurant on the beach at it was a magical time.  The chefs were from Sydney and knew how, and where to party.  They took me to The Underground in Kings Cross on Thursday Nights, called 'High Times'.  The residents were Rob Milton and Mal Russel, but the main night for them was Saturday nights called 'Delicious'.  Thursday night was Hospitality Night, for all those who would be hosting everyone else over the weekend.  It was serious underground house music in what was previously The Kardomah Café, which hosted many bands including Screaming Tribesmen.  The resident's focus was Delicious, so Thursday saw a variety of DJ's hosting the night.  They played until 6 or 7am and I saw the day begin many times leaving there.

From there I went to Sasha & Digweed 'Northern Exposre', a few Festivals and Forest Doofs, Chemical Brothers in Sydney, Gatecrasher, and more will come back to me with time.  Some very blurry memories.

Hi,
thanks for sharing those memories. It just brought some flash backs for me.
Underground, Ice Box, and even earlier than that Sugar Reef.
Which Doofs have you been too ?
I only get to Rainbow Serpent Festival in Victoria these day. Best outdoor sound systems imo
