I dont know what speakers you are referring to sorry (although I have heard somthing along those lines).

Don't know how they sound in comparison to the Wilson Watt speakers (if that is what they are a copy of) but I think they sound 1st class. They are not "forward" sounding, quite the opposite (Ed. can attest to that).

The Amp I have is 5 x 140 watts (pictured seperately as I am reviewing another HT amp at the moment) and drives them well but more power would always be desireable.

The Q50 has been hacked for pal progressive. There is a code you enter which enables pal progressive, but unfortunately when I did this, it totally wiped the region coding of the machine (wouldnt play any region at all). Sent it back to get it re-modded for region free and all is sweet.

The speakers arent quite in the corners, they are about 1 foot from the back and , the photos are obviously quite deceptive. I cant have them in any closer because the bottom of the picture (on 1.85 movies) would start reflecting on them.

Future plans for the HT involve some sound dampening (perhaps curtaining behind the screen and down the sides of the walls), painting the whole HT (that bright yellow was there when we shifted in, I have never liked it) and some cable management (probably some form of capping running up behind the screen, then down the centre to the projector). All these mods require $$ and until a grant is received from the financial controller in the house, it has to wait.

From what I've been told (and read), the Q50 switches to R3 when converted to PAL prog, and a hex code (via Pronto, Palm or similar) is needed to switch it back to codefree. Senator, what do you think of the player? I've been contemplating getting one (or a 963SA) for a few weeks now.

Adam,

I find the picture on it very good. If you have a look at the www at the bottom of this thread, there is a screenie of T2 - Ultimate eddition played through my projector. The piccie doesnt really do it justice though as it has had all the resolution taken out of it during upload to that site.

There is a marked difference going from s-video to component and then another increase from interlaced to progressive.

Opening scene to Pulp Fiction is a perfect example. When the two are sitting planning the coffee shop robbery, the blinds behind them used to shimmer badly if s-video is selected. put on the prog-scan function, through component out and hey presto, no aliasing.

Cant comment too much about black levels (LCD projector has contrast of 400:1) but shadow detail seems good. T2 has alot of dark scenes, as well as the ever present "James Cameron Blue", no problems at all seeing full image detail.

Music is the biggest advance for the player. My previous machine, a 955 was lacklustre at rendering music and had minimal bass. Through the Q50 is superb, Jazz even has good life to it (ok Ed. I know it wont compete with the Meridian CD player playing through your Plinius) and bass is excellent (I have even gotten up to turn off my sub a few times, only to discover it already was).

The player is quiet in operation, the remote is simple to use (although no backlight function making it difficult to use in dark rooms unless you know the remote), some have complained about the virtually non existent display on the player (measures about 1 square inch - (no changing to mm please)), but personally, I applaud Phillips for this. All of my equip is at the front of the room under the centre speaker. It is painful during a movie to have bright flashing lights coming from the front.

If I keep writing, does it count as a review Ed?
