Is that an Acos lustre you're after Owen?

I hear they go nicely on an Ariston RD11 Supereiur.

Sorry I haven't got an Acos lustre, pretty rare in these parts I'd say.

I originally had a Lustre arm on my RD11S but thought it was a bit too heavy for it. The suspension was maxed out with the weight of the arm and steel subchassis.

I ended up "downgrading" to a Sumiko Premier MMT, which seemed a little better suited to the turntable.

I'm not too familiar with these Lustre products, but I think, yes, the orig S-shaped Rega arm was made by Lustre.

The GST-801 was a very heavy armbase construction, not exceptional sonically I'm told.

Some the Japanese arms of that period (80s) were impressive pcs of engineering, as were some of the TTs. The arm on the Kenwood LO-7D TT comes to mind.

Sorry to go O/T Owen.

Magoo/Chris, are you still using the RD11s, & using the old power supply/pack?

The T/T itself is a masterpiece of Scottish engineering.

Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,

I've been using a Well Tempered turntable for just over ten years but have kept the RD11s.

Earlier this year I had my HFA amp in for service so I dusted off my "little British sitting room" system. Ariston RD11s/Sumiko MMT arm + Shure V15 mkIV cartridge/Mission Cyrus One amp/Roksan Hotcakes bookshelf speakers. My mum, doing what mums do best, managed to find a spare stylus for this late 70's cartridge hidden away in her office when she shifted house at the beginning of the year! This combination had all my records sounding quite nice ... warm, comfortable, not too much emphasis on imaging or soundstage ... very vinyl sounding I guess?!

The Ariston was a good deck at the time and one can only imagine what could have been if the company had Ivor Tiefenbrun's marketing genius behind it. Would it've been able to produce the necessary design innovations that have kept the Linn LP12 at or near the top for so long? Who knows?

Did you see the review from 1998 on vinylengine.com?

The motor developed a hum not long after I bought the turntable. I am sure the replacement that I got was actually a Linn motor. I also replaced the suspension springs and grommets with Linn replacement parts. Every now and then, I've been having a peek on E-bay to see what price secondhand Valhalla boards are going for.

Owen, I can't remember which model Lustre arm was originally on my turntable, but it was S-shaped, shiny, heavy and felt very well made.

cheers, Chris

Thanks for the heads up!

I have recently been offered another tonearm, which may or may not eventuate, ....so I will still give the Lustre some thought.

Many thanks,

Owen
