emma1553552694 Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Im after a pair of coaxial or full range speakers 92 db sensitivity or better for a low watt system, goodmans or sim, or what have you, I have a cabinet design in mind.
Owen Y Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 The likes of Goodmans Axiom or Tannoy or Wharfdale coaxials are difficult to find these days, but they turn up now & then. What sort of cabinet do you have in mind & what driver budget? Owen

otisredding Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Without being technical - Coaxial speakers have the tweeter mounted in the centre of the woofer. This provides really, really accurate imaging.
Guest Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Some basics... http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:bLtncNTrkqsJ:www.frazierspeakers.com/download/coax.pdf+coaxial+loudspeakers&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1 As well as the UK brands mentioned by Owen, the yanks were found of them back in the 50's/60's, especially Altec-Lansing with their horn loaded coaxials like the famous 604. Once popular with the car audio fraternity. There's a few manufacturers left using coaxials in home audio. But for the life of me the only name that comes to mind is Thiel.
Shane Hanify Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 There's Kef and Zu as well I believe. Cheers, Shane.
Owen Y Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Tannoy's version was unusual, they called it Dual Concentric, with a horn-loaded HF cone. Altec (USA) had a similar Duplex coax spkr. Another variation, is the "whizzer" cone type, where a 2nd, smaller slave cone sits inside the main cone in order to extend HFs upward, eg. Fostex, Lowther & the Nirvana drivers mentioned by emma on the DIY thread. Japanese had/have their versions also. So-called "Coax" spkrs with separate tweeter simply installed in front of a woofer, are super common esp in car audio. Will be interested in what emma comes up with, as the single driver route has merit, the opposite approach to complex, multi-way spkrs. We're talking "single driver" covering the broad midbass~HFs, maybe augmented with a super-tweeter and/or subwoofer if desired. Owen
