markeroonie Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Hi all Not sure where best to post this, hence am starting off here. I have a bunch of records (40-60) from my late teens/early 20's (mostly late 70's and early 80's) that have been packed away since I first got a CD player back in '89. I am finally thinking about revisiting my youth, such as it was, and want to listen to them again, but don't want to purchase a decent turntable etc due to both the cost and space. Also I have doubts about how well looked after they were by my younger self Does anyone know of a decent usb turntable worth getting, cos I can then resell it once I have recorded the disks, or could I borrow/rent/whatever a proper TT and amp and go direct into my laptop via my sound card. Suggestions/ideas? thanks in advance Mark
snowdownunder Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 G'day Mark, I've been using this for about 6 years now http://www.polderbits.com/?ref=adword1&gclid=CPSmg8ma4aUCFQrhbgodwlw01Q You can try it for free for two weeks. I also use it for LP to ring tones for my mobile. Cheers, snow.
valvster Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 Not sure I should be putting in a word for The Pirate Bay, not sure of the legalities but I don't see any problems in downloading a FLAC torrent if you already own a vinyl copy. Like you I dug out my collection of 70's & 80's records and searched for a digital conversion process but it's already there via bit torrent eg http://thepiratebay.org/search/hmv/0/99/100/ I've downloaded some of HMV's stuff, not entirely perfect but it sounds way better than what i remember....no amplifier hiss and the clicks and plops are manually edited out. You can get a WDTV Live media player for under $150 and access your whole music collection from your computer's hard drive, kinda like a juke box with a remote control. Also in the process of converting all my CD's to FLAC(Free Lossless Audio Codec... http://flac.sourceforge.net/)
markeroonie Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 Thanks Snowdownunder, however I still need the hardware. Valvster, thats a good thought, however i have a bunch of rare punk stuff that won't be out there. I have already ripped my CD's to flac, and was thinking about the Sqeezebox Touch when i see one at a low enough price
valvster Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 Check it out; http://thepiratebay.org/music/genre/punk http://thepiratebay.org/music/genre/punk%20rock
hired goon Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 G'day, I have used Audacity in the past ... just plug the RCA outs of the turntable into yer pooter and record Side 1 and Side 2 as .wav files. Since my laptop only has a 1/8" audio jack I had to get an adapter to convert 2xRCA to that jack but it seems to work well-enough. Once you have the raw wave file for each side then you can de-click and de-pop, split up tracks and convert to FLAC. Time-consuming process, however, bit it's free. --Geoff

Much better than the Goldwave software. http://www.clickrepair.net/ Geoff B
