I do like most things Audeze - actually it's been AGES since I've posted in the headphone section!!

But, just having a check over prices, it's interesting to note you can now buy a HD800 for around $1349, and you need a minimum of $1499 to get a LCD-2. When I had my LCD-2.2's (non fazor) the HD's were considerably more expensive.

The only reason why I let go of my LCD-X's is that were too heavy for my scrawny neck - and had to let go of my 2.2's for financial reasons at the time.... If i was looking in that area again, I'd look at the HD's purely for something different, and because of the far lighter weight/comfort:)

That's because big company like sennheiser haven't updated their price list ever since the dollar slide down 30% since last year. Where smaller importer that import boutique item like audeze stuff update their price much more often depend on currency fluctuations

I work in retail - so all that is known to me.

Regardless, one should test both as they're within ear shot of each other.

I have kept my pair of HD800, mainly because at the current price they are sold for, it's not worth selling them.

The thing about the HD800 I found is they take a heck of a lot of work to get them sounding their best, in my case I found that was a good balanced amp and the cardas clear headphone cable (about the fifth cable I tried). And if you have the hd800 and a pair of Audeze, they couldn't be more different sound wise. The sennheiser at its best is an amazing sounding phone for soundstage and detail. It has very clean bass, but compared to the Audeze it seems anemic.

The Audeze compared to the Sennheiser at its best sounded a little dull and closed in to me, beautiful to listen to and great heft though.

i can't wait to see what Audeze do in the future in riposte to the new hifiman's et al, it should be stunning.

The LCD-4. Overpriced crap. Don't get me wrong I liked Audeze and they can make good innovative products, but they are simply over there heads to price the LCD-4's at $5k USD with no change other then some incremental driver updates.

And they haven't fixed there inconsistent build/reliability and QC problems.

Didn't realise there was an lcd-4...I do now thanks.

You must have heard them already to make those kind of comments, are you in a trial group or something ?

And they are circa 4K usd not 5k, still a heck of a lot though I agree.

$4-5k, enough for a nice Stax rig.

I tried the LCD-X and LCD-3 at A2A on a few endgame rigs. Bass quantity was huge but i thought they sounded muddy and veiled compared to my HD800s. Didn't extend as low either & soundstage on the 800s is untouchable.

Instead of buying hyped 2.5k cans with shitty quality control get some HD800s for 1k used and spend the other $1500 on a multibit bifrost / valhalla 2 stack. EQ out the 6khz peak if it bothers you.

That is as close to an endgame rig as you'll get without spending 5k and I've heard rigs 2-4 times as expensive that sounded 2-4 times more terrible.

NB. I know the HD800s get a bad rap for their sound signature and lots of people think they sound lean and tinny. I promise you they are anything but - they are simply extremely picky when it comes to upstream gear. I tried them with a GSX mk2 and Mytek DAC and they sounded horrendous at about $7000 outlay.

I hope to god they sound better than they look :)

having an extra belt on the head might be a plus for some :D

the thing with audeze nowadays is the headphone costing too much

the thing with hd800 is the amp costing too much

the thing with new headphone in general is there is too much overpriced stuff lately while good stuff got discontinued (Hifiman he6,he500)

IMO, a He 6 and some decent speaker amp (master 10 come to mind)  and it would best most so called end game rigs out there

Headphone companies are starting to price things like high end speaker companies. It's greedy and not fair. I don't earn a 6 figure dentist salary income, do you?

it's funny how I got into this headphone game because I couldn't afford my dream speaker at the time. And now the headphone I wish to own cost twice as much as my speaker  :hiccup

I bet your less expensive speaker setup is better sounding then your headphones.

Ah IEM's, I gave up on IEM's after my ES5 were stolen at gym and waste of money I spent on other peoples no experience recommendations on Head-fi while I was still on there and end up being disappointed after every purchase.

Feel you pain there, I capped my iems limit at 100 bucks after I lost my w4 so I don't need to baby them in public.

Looks really cool.

IMO there is 3 areas where there is a lot of exciting things happening

  • Headphones
  • Dacs
  • Music servers

I can only sit on the sidelines and salivate, but it does make this hobby very interesting.

If the chap at the YouTube channel inner fidelity gives them the thumbs up, I'll get a pair

They are open back, so they'll radiate sound? I'm not quite sure what the point of an open back IEM is.

I wear my IEM's when i'm commuting / on the plane / in the gym (if I went to the gym that is). Situations where I want music but don't want to bother other people with noise from my music.

If i'm at home, and don't need to worry about bothering anyone, I have my speakers.

I suppose you could use this in any situation where you would use open back headphones. But then, why not just use the open back headphones in the first place.

Very simple, when I walk my dogs for over an hour everyday, I'd like to have some music, but in the past, my canal phones have made it risky, being as I can't ever hear cars pulling out of driveways. So the chances of my dogs ahead of me getting flattened is higher, hence I don't wear them.

At at least with open backs, played at a moderate level for some background music, I might still be more aware of the world around me.

Remeber, not every product sold is suitable for everyone.
