Guest Bodhisattva Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 What's the PF article? Hi PP, here is the review fyi http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue55/lcd.htm Bodhi
alistairm Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Well, credit to ALO. They have just let me know that they have remade a cable for me and sent it. The first one is missing in UPS world (a tracking number was provided). The second one is coming by Fedex!
alistairm Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 The newly minted cable arrived this morning. Initial impressions are very positive. Resolution is improved, as it the sense of space and separation. The burn in is underway in earnest!
jrisles Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 Great to hear ... (pardon the pun) ... :-) My SAA cable will be here approximately mid-July. Along with my SAA power lead, interconnects and umbilical lead ... so i am expecting BIG improvements with these upgrades of mine!!
jrisles Posted June 23, 2011 Author Posted June 23, 2011 Yes, I've heard the headphone out is good with the LCD-2 but no comprehensive reviews as to how good it actually is. Listening to both should make for an interesting night this coming Thursday when I pick up the Weiss. Either way, in this instance, it's a dilemma between good or better outcomes. To give the Phonitor as good a chance to keep impressing, I've ordered a custom Furutech XLRs that are better spec'ed than their $900 Reference II cable. Getting these made to order by krispykables in Sydney. If in the end I find the Phonitor surplus to the synergy between the Weiss and Aueze, I'll still hang on to it. The wife has commented on the sound leakage of the LCD-2s so this might be the perfect opportunity to pick up a pair of Edition 8s later down the road! Whatever happens, the Phonitor is a keeper just on aesthetics alone! So Lord Mike any update on your Phonitor and Weiss comparisons?
Lord Mike Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 Curiosity got the better of me and i have a pre-owned set of Alo 22AWG cables coming. Can anyone who has experience with this wire comment on its microphonic tendancies?
Lord Mike Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 So Lord Mike any update on your Phonitor and Weiss comparisons? Early days, but the phonitor has greater sense of depth and seperation in its presentation compared to the Weiss. This is merely an observation through an LCD2 with only 100 hours clocked in. I should also add the phonitor has had the Burson opamp transfusion so its hard to tell how a stock phonitor would have compared. Since you seem to be a fan of Stefan Audio Art, this link may interest you. http://stefanaudioart.com/Phonitor%20mod%20pac May I suggest any further questions are directed to me via PM? Apologies to the OP.
zipstartcanoe Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Lord Mike, you are so much politer than TheHamofMam!

Apologies to the OP. Fair enough - a good wrap for the Phonitor ... although having said that i haven't read much about the Weiss as a headphone amp/dac. Alot has been written about the Weiss as a standalone DAC in main rigs etc ... which is what i suspect was the main design function. Am keen to have a listen to the Phonitor now. :-)
alistairm Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Good Lord please don't feel the need to stay strictly on topic in this particular thread! I'm enjoying ALL the info on how to better enjoy these cans.
Lord Mike Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 Am keen to have a listen to the Phonitor now. :-) As am I with the Eddie Current Balancing Act!
jrisles Posted July 3, 2011 Author Posted July 3, 2011 Been having a great session this weekend with my Headphone rig which includes the LCD-2's and my APSv3 after market cable. Simply stunning ... i think cable is pretty well broken in by now ... as are the power and driver tubes which i have been rolling on and off to try to settle on some good combo's with my valve amp. Makes me wonder just how much this sound can be improved upon. And i have still yet to receive all of the SAA "goodies". Anyhow whilst listening to some exquisite music i have been having a good read of this thread on head-fi (from start to finish); http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/533209/lcd-2-owners-which-aftermarket-cable-do-you-use

Duckman Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I appreciate them :-) I got on the bandwagon with the Lite DAC-83 and, in conjunction with the Violectric V200, the sound is very good indeed. Loving it. First time for me that my doubts about their darkness are beginning to lift. Lots of clarity now. Not lit-up sparkling clarity of Stax, but a more solid, weighty, organic, natural clarity. But - if anyone wants to know (sorry OP) - IMO, the Burson HA160D is almost as good, and in one way slightly better (the organic tone is up one notch). RE cables: I'm no aficionado, but Trevor from Norse Audio makes (to my ears), excellent sounding, and beautiful looking cables quite cheaply. If you're on Head-fi, look up member TigzStudio.
jrisles Posted July 16, 2011 Author Posted July 16, 2011 Ok - i have just placed an order for the Stefan AudioArt (SAA) Endorphin LCD-2 High-End Headphone Cable. (Also getting the umbilical power lead that SAA make for the Eddie Current Balancing Act headphone amp. Because the Eddie Current is a "two box" amp the boxes are connected using this umbilical power lead). With an advised date of delivery for the 14th July. So hopefully by then you would have well and truly ran your ALO cable in and give me weekend to run my SAA cable in and should be good to review all three cables - APS, ALO & SAA. (All i need would be a Norse Cable and we have ourselves a respectable line up of LCD-2 Cables for review/shootout).http://stefanaudioart.com/headphone%20cable%20Audez'e%20endor%20se http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/eddiecurrent3/2.html Received an email this morning that my SAA goodies are on there way. I will be out of town when they arrive but will get a chance to begin the whole burn in process next weekend. The newly minted cable arrived this morning. Initial impressions are very positive. Resolution is improved, as it the sense of space and separation. The burn in is underway in earnest! alistairm - any further impressions you'd care to make at this stage on your ALO cables?
hpz Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, i was wondering which shop did you guys purchase your LCD-2s from? I'm looking to purchase a pair in the near future. Also were there any issues with customs? Thanks Edited July 17, 2011 by hpz
kunalraiker Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 Audeze sells them online,no custom issues as AUS Dollar is on a high.
braddo Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I've been listening to a pair of these a fair bit lately, and I'm really growing to like them. I found 'em to be nothing special at first, nothing jumped out, but they continue to impress me as the weeks go by out of SS and tube amps. I enjoy imaging before anything in a phone, and I find the imaging on these things to be frigging amazing. I've heard them being called a 'bassy' phone, but when I listen to an album with a Fender Precision electric bass guitar driven through an Ampeg stack, well, why/how would that not sound 'bassy'?, it sounds like it should, just like it does at the gig, same goes for floor toms/kick drum etc., and the lows are textured/detailed. To me the sound has 'weight', rather than being a 'heavy' or 'dark' phone it's got a big sound. Guitars and amps sound like they are made out of timber which is fantastic, something I've always wanted in a phone. Time will tell, but so far I like 'em and i'm going to keep 'em for a while.

braddo Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) Hi WN. I use the pre-amps that are in my sig. I switch between a ME24 with updgraded power supply, and this preamp built by Earle - http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/showthread.php/25822-Custom-dual-chassis-pre-amplifier-build. All the amps (including ME25) are terrific, transparent, and drive the LCD-2 with ease, they don't seem to be as hard to drive as 701's on my gear which was surprising to me. fdhfdy Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 my lcd2s rev arrived today. Had put on for about a hour, not as comfortable as my hd800s but a nice phone.
jrisles Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 Ok my goodies from SAA have arrived as i have just been reliably informed. Problem is i won't be home until the weekend to test these babies out. A minor problem with Customs (darn forgot to let the sender know to declare a value of less than $1000!!!). But now all good ... can't wait to get home and test this rig out ... i am expecting big things ...
