not much help but i owned an ecofan amp once (15+ years ago). bought it second hand. all i remember was that it had a wooden base and it was my first valve experience. i think it needed new tubes or biasing but that was way over my head back then. fwiw, supposedly they wound their own transformers. didn't know they're still around. i'd be interested to hear how they compare to other amps today.

Has anyone heard any Ecofan gear, either the Triode 45 or the 6a3?

My understanding is that Ecofan is or was locally designed and made.{definitely open to correction on this} Back in the early to mid 90's I visited a store upstairs in the Canterbury arcade{from memory} where Ecofan were on display, sourced by either a 301 or 401 Garrard with 12" SME. Chris Sinclair from Soundline in K Road also put me onto "the guy from Ecofan"[whose name escapes me][Was it Graham?] Who lived in Kelston. He recapped my Rogers HG88Mk3. I seem to remember large efficient Ecofan loudspeakers as well. They were reasonably well known [at least in Auckland] back then and indeed possibly earlier. Although tubes were around back then(yes I know they've been around a fair while) the resurgance and availability we see now eclipses what was available back then. Thanks partly also to the internet. So I am keenly inerested to find out more about an old brand name that was nudging its way to prominance back then and is still alive and swimming today in a somewhat larger pond.

Good News!

Thanks for bringing Ecofan to the forum. Craig w:D

Murray Dick is an excellent valve amp designer, possibly the best around down here.

(He's not bad at tweaking your Revox Reel to Reel either.)

However, these days he's not building on a continuous basis & lead-times can vary. So, probably best to audition amps that are actually readily available/in stock.

A member of the "club" (Ecofan owners club!) drew my attention to this thread, and it was interesting to see Ecofan on this site. The amps were slow moving in N.Z. but the guys on the other side of the World picked up on them and i rounded up any unsold items and sent them off. You can see reviews of the Triode 2000, 6A3 amp and Line-amp, and the Bufferzone and Boost-it on the site: www. theartofsound.net, and comments from us there.

Forgot to mention, the Ecofan pieces reviews on "The art of sound.net" are under "Strokes of Genius" The guys are twisting my arm, and more 6A3 and SV-811-10 amps are under way. SV-811-10 ones (only two) sold though. Jack.
