Maybe you should *splurge* on a cable :D

I really liked the HE1000se too. I'm finding the Susvara overall better, but for close to half the RRP the HE1000se was damn close, albeit bit different tonally.

If only I could find an accomplished cable builder!!!

Anyone know where I can get a replacement cable for the Massdrop/HiFiMan 4xx, the supplied 4ft cable is way too short, 2.5 to 3m is more like what I need.

I have to move closer to my gear if I want to use those phones, unlike the AKG Q701 which have a 3m and 6m in the box.

Stax of fun right there. What tubes are you using in the BHSE? And thoughts between T8000 and BHSE? Thanks.

Expand

I use XF3s and Philips Metal Bases. Doing some tube rolling occasionally.

For the difference between T8000 and BHSE:

Basically, T8000 is a enhanced version of 007TII, it offers much solid driving power. If you own a 009/009S or 007MKI/MKII, T8000 might be a very good option for you.

STAX SRM-007TII and SRM-727 are designed for 007MKI/MKII, but they can't really offer enough controlling power. That's why STAX make another amp for 009/009S. Personally I think 009S suits T8000 better, but 009 also works pretty well on T8000.

STAX official amp generally has less driving power than KG amps, which leads to a softer and smaller scale of sound stage. However, it is not entirely bad for the pop music and electronic music genres. There is a saying. STAX only sounds like STAX with its official amp.

There is another merit for using T8000 as it can combine with lots of preamps (bypass mode) to achieve different style. I've used KRELL Evolution 222 with T8000 for a while. They are indeed good combination. Before I migrate back to Australia end of last year, I've sold my Evolution 222 and only brought my T8000 with me. After a few month I've found a local stock BHSE, that's why I switch to BHSE.

For the KG amps, BHSE and KGSSHV offers more powerful driving power to 009/009S with great controlling power, makes it better for playing large scale music like Orchestra works. However, compared with T8000, it sounds a little bit rough - I know it is a bit weird to say a electrostatic system to be rough as all of them should be very smooth, but you can't really achieved absolute smooth with strong driving power.

In conclusion, enhancing driving power is a double edge sword, some people love the softer and smoother tone of STAX official amps, some people prefer KG amps. But for most of STAX headphones, enhancing driving power maybe it is an 'necessary evil'. It's up for your choice.

A great solid and versatile amp to start with….or even finish with. (Unless you go to another level at 2x and more the price)

i have the wa2 which is an otl amp and best suited with high impedance hps and it suits my hd800 very very well. No need to sell it or look for any other amp for my hd800

now you just have to spend hours and hours researching tubes :)

Haha…The tube search has already begun. The number of options is somewhat overwhelming at this point in the journey.  Gotta start somewhere though.

A couple of tips that i pass on from my experience (based on what works for me):

1) quality over quantity. You don’t need, and won’t use a huge range of tubes so go towards the tubes that you think match up with your preferences the best. You may sell off o few that don’t quite do it for you. Some like to buy every tube under the sun. Each to their own.

2) if there’s consensus about particular tubes and what they offer or how “good” they may sound (say on headfi), the consensus is usually around the mark. Some people like to go off on tangents and get adapters to try all types of left of centre tubes. That never suited me but others enjoy that part of this hobby and that’s ok too - but not my thing

that’s my 2c

Good info and advice here. One thing to watch out for on some of the forums, are those who really push the boundaries in terms of the model of tubes they use. Amp manufacturers build their circuit topologies to certain tolerances and parameters. That creates the sound and outputs they design for. Many forum members try to put as many variations as they can into these amps. Some of that is because they "like" certain tubes or they want to get a different sound or power. Please be mindful of these examples. They can shorten the life of your amp because they drive the circuit beyond its normal tolerances or they can literally kill your amp and void your warranty. There's some pretty crazy tube compliments that some people put together into circuits that just weren't built for them.
