Have at me folks!

Alright Neil....  I've been waiting to say this for a long time...

I find your commentary on the high end of the headphone game to be ruddy marvellous.

I appreciate your taking the time to summarise all of the above.

I've learned a lot from your posts (as well as many others on here - I'm looking at you, Benno!)

It's the subjectivities of our hobby that help make it so interesting.

Trying to figure out which headphones are going to work best for me is like trying to solve a complex riddle.  Every opinion posted is potentially another clue - that might just lead me to my Holy Grail setup.

Thanks for posting all that, mate!

Which of their pads do you recommend?

Ta!

Appreciate your comments.

In relation to the Utopia pads, the stock ones are fine. All I’d say is get the Dekoni after markets if you want to get more bass response without EQ.

The Elite Sheepskin fenestrated are my go to:

A shame i have to disregard your whole list as i'm more a 70s East Coast guy. 🏙️👊

Take the suspension strap off and stick a pilot pad around the metal band Hugo. Not half bad.

Nice. TBH though i don't have an issue with the stock setup. Actually perfectly fits my noggin. Just as light as the baffle version but now a nice seal.

Here is my current setup. :) Out of picture is the Feliks Audio Echo mkII. I need a bigger desk.....

Been enjoying making some headphone cables lately

Using Pure Copper Litz OCC cable with 4 wire braiding using Neutrik 4 pin gold connector.  Never seen this before but it is heavier than the Black connector

My current system. Somehow ended up with all current Etymotic models - ER2SE, ER2XR, ER3SE, ER3XR, ER4SR, ER4XR. Luckily they don’t have a 5 or 6 series 😅

Haha Benchmark maybe - Susvara no (too boring). Enjoying what I have though and have some gear I feel hits the value sweet spot for me.

Hey Franky;

Im intrigued on the Etymotic’s, reading the fit/comfort can be an issue, but if I were to try one, which would you recommend as the best bang for buck ?

Hi Ray,

I would describe the differences between the models as follows.

ER2:

Very non fatiguing and perhaps the most natural sounding probably due to the dynamic drivers. Work well with things like vocals but lacking a tad in speed and resolution versus the 3 and 4 series. They do have a tad more treble than the 3 series but I don’t find them bright (Etys are generally not the brightest I find, if anything they all have a certain mid forwardness). The ER2s May have a slightly deeper soundstage than the 3 and 4 series.

ER3:

The warmest sounding Etys in the range are ER3XR. I really like these for my a&k sr25 dap. They have better speed, dynamics and resolution compared to the ER2 series. Can listen for hours without fatigue and they really have plenty of bass.

ER4:

A tad more neutral compared to the ER3 series. Depending on what you use then with I’d say the price increase is not necessarily worth it (they are also no longer US made but do come with certificates for driver matching and low distortion). I use the ER4SR with my Hugo2 and they sound fantastic. However, they can sound a bit thin on my dap with some material.

XR vs SE/SR series:

I mostly use the XR series for my dap and the SE/SE for Hugo 2 as the Hugo 2 has plenty of bass to start with. My dap can sound a bit thin with the SE/SR models.

The 2 and 3 series seem to sell at roughly the same price point. If you intend to use them in a portable setup I’d say the ER3XR are a great option.

As a starting point to Etys I’d recommend the ER3XR (or perhaps ER2XR) as most will find the SE/SR series a tad bass shy and the 4 series is a big step up price wise at marginally better performance.

I personally don’t mind the fit and comfort but you’ll have to experiment with tips and need to be comfortable with fairly deep insertion.

I do believe any of the Etys are a total steal at their respective price points and I mostly choose the Er4sr over Focal Clears for desktop listening with Hugo2.
