:D In the spirt of Sheds Tantalising turntables and tonearms - i thiought we neded a few pictorials of headphones.

I am only a second hand owner of headphones as well but aspire to get into sdome decent gear one day. A friend of mine told me this is the pair he uses at home and in looking at them on line I can see why - love the look and they seem to get kick arse reviews. So these are in my dreamboat headphones to have category.

You drive them off the speaker terminals, so you would need a battery powered amp under one arm. Might affect you balance

Ultrasone of America has released what it’s calling the world’s most expensive headphones, the $1500 Edition 9.

The headphones incorporate titanium-plated drivers to deliver “astonishing†sonic clarity and transparency. The ear pads are padded in Ethiopian sheep leather, which is good, because we wouldn’t want any bog-stand New Zealand sheep leather in our top-spec headphones.

They’re not designed for someone who needs to pack light because they’re travelling in steerage rather than up front; they come in their own metal attaché case.

Ultrasone’s S-Logic technology has been built into them, so that sound pressure is reduced by 40%, and electromagnetic field radiation is reduced by nearly 100%.

As for technical specifications, the headphones feature a frequency range of 8Hz-35,000Hz, an impedance of 30ohm, and a 3 metre cord.

These are limited edition headphones, so get yours while you still can from www.ultrasoneusa.com.

And at the smaller end - but still over $500

Features

Sony redefines the world of sound with its new 2007 PFR-V1 Personal Field Speaker that mimics audiophile grade front-facing speakers. First in the industry (and the world) to separate bass from mid and treble frequencies so that users can hear even better sound. Bass sounds are reproduced through a new "extended bass reflex duct" which extends directly into the ear canals. Mid and treble frequencies are projected through the two unique looking spheres towards the ears just like a pair of two perfectly positioned speakers. Result? An extended frequency playback of 35Hz to 25KHz, with better frequency separation. The new, and one-of-a-kind "Personal Field Speaker" PFR-V1 comes with ultra large drivers of 21mm (newly developed by Sony) for superb sound reproduction. A new flagship headphone, or should we say, speaker-on-your-head on the market.

The KING

The SONY MDR-R1O audiophile headphones are truly in a Class of its Own with unequaled sound reproduction, matchless design, unrivaled comfort and unparalleled attention to detail. Designed to be the Very Best In the World.

The Housing

After extensive testing of materials from all over the world, the heart-wood of mature Zelkova trees was selected as most suitable for the housing of the MDR-R1O. Evaluation was made in terms of hardness, timbre, weight, and overall sound-transferability characteristics. In order to overcome the problem of designing housing that could produce a natural, distortion-free sound, engineers used the FRESDAM (Freeform Shape Design and Manufacture) computer-aided design system. A delicate waveform was carved out of the interior wall, achieving sound expansion and acoustics equivalent to that of a concert hall.

The Headband

The housing position is set automatically when placed on the head, due to a shape-memory alloy employed in the self-adjusting head-band. Regardless of head size, the super-elasticity of the headband applies just enough inward pressure to create the proper acoustic space between the ear and the housing.

The Diaphragm

Using leading-edge biotechnology techniques, a natural fiber (bio-cellulose) produced by a bacteria called Acetobacter acti is dehydrated, then compressed to a thickness of 20 microns in a diaphragm die. The advantage of the ultra-thin bio-cellulose diaphragm is that it can produce the same sound velocity as an aluminum or titanium diaphragm, along with the warm, delicate sound that a paper diaphragm provides. Trebles are sparkling clear, and bass notes are remarkably deep and rich.

The Holder

Hangers made of magnesium that attach the housings to the head-band reduce resonance. Magnesium was chosen because of its excellent vibration attenuation and absorption qualities. To prevent mechanical vibration, such as those of the cord or headband, a housing insulator was placed between the ear pad and the baffle plate.

The Earpads

To provide the ultimate in comfort, Greek lambskin covers the entire earpads, along with the headband and suspender Renowned world-wide for its velvety softness and smoothness, the lambskin affords a luxurious feel that allows even the wearer with the most sensitive skin extended listening comfort.

The Cord and Plug

The cord wires are made of 99.9999% pure, linear-crystal oxygen-free copper to prevent signal loss during transference. A durable, soft silicon insulates the wires, and the insulation is coated in 100 % pure double-woven silk. The OFC plug is double-plated; once with rhodium to prevent signal loss, and the second time with gold to prevent sound quality deterioration from imperfect contact.

There seem to be many different "worlds best headphones".
No, there is STAX, then there is everything else.

or

I've been using STAX cans since the mid 80's. I have dynamics too, and have heard a lot of others, but nothing is as good as an electrostatic for headphones.

Hey A9X I got to very briefly try the stax when I was in melbourne - they are very nice but soo different to what Iam used to (which is probably just crap) - I reckon I would have to give them a really good try out to get used to them - but amazing never the less.

Now I am a sucker for the older looking headphones and id say the stax meets that in my opinion but I like the look of these Sens HD 1000's:D
