Expand Really just cosmetic but I thought it looks better with them than without them and with the 5654 tubes very easy to see the glowing filaments also 1
wasabijim Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 interesting... I've got that Radi0kit RK318 based phono you made. with some miniwatt ecc83s rolled in you get a nice single pulse of orange on start-up. then it fades and like other tubes its just that slight filament orange glow. would be nice to have the phono and tubes emphasised a bit more when spinning even if it's just showy for the sake of it 1

Good enough to do some needle drop hi res record rips, with a computer. In it's current arrangement it just needs some time put into getting rid of a minor earth loop hum from something not yet identified. It didn't like the new set up, nothing that cannot be fixed. Not complaining, working with it not against. Will have learned something when I do. 1
mwhouston Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 With my latest Piccolo small tube preamp, by accident, I also purchased the 6J1 tubes. I listened to the 6J1 tubes for four hours yesterday and thought I was missing nothing. Today I listened with the JAN GE 5654W tubes. Straight out of the box and dead cold they shone. If you never heard the 5654Ws you would think you have heard the best with this inexpensive tube preamp and 6J1 tubes. The GE are a big step-up from the 6J1s in transparency and clarity. Im not going to prattle on and the crazy small cost of the GEs will be forgotten in about 30 seconds once the music starts. 2
mwhouston Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 The simplicity, cost saving and beauty of a universal external PS with tube rec. One PS to serve many tube amps, well two anyhow. Cost saving of over $400. Both my “Xfi” and “La Technique” share the PS, one at a time. Two two stage, simple tube amps very different in presentation. One SET and one SE UL. The SET, clear, transparent and open and the SE UL, warm, bassy and driven. Love them both and now driven from my new small tube preamp (“Piccolo Pro”) with remote. Can it get better. Maybe. Im thinking on making a Garber “Y” amp with 6EM7s (6SL7 and 45 in one compact bottle). 4

My “Xfi” maybe one of only two clones ever. “Yfi” maybe the only clone should I build one. Like, how hard could it be. I have all the parts except the three plates bent at 120 degrees each. 1
sleach Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 Building a pair of retro type cabinets to house a pair of decent but unattractive studio monitors and a pair of beat up old svs subs. 8
mwhouston Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 A 71a PP AMP. Personally I wouldn’t do it but the amp is beautiful and the audio which accompanied it very good. For me tubes are SE or move to SS. The other is just a nice build. 1

Grimmie Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Sensationally beautiful looking piece of equipment and surely would sound incredible, - but this has me head-scratching: - That meant to be good? Many amps have a point before a number like that plus a naught sometimes. I'm guessing it's different for valve amps but nevertheless..

Expand Of course high efficiency speakers only. My guess is 1W maybe 2W with a tail wind but colouration would be higher. My 71a SET - Intermezzo - is 1/3W. Plays well through my 12” concentric Beymas @ 98db sensitivity. Bisguittin Posted November 3, 2023 Posted November 3, 2023 Mark also built my stupendous 71A SET power amp "Timbre". It's good for about 0.5W and teams superbly with vintage Klipsch Heresy II's at 100w+(?) sensitivity. 1

mwhouston Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 Just took a quick count. I've only made six preamps and three power amps this year. Might be able to squeeze one more in before year’s end. http://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2023/
sleach Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Monitor + subs in a retro cabinet. Nearly done, at least all the construction is done. I somehow bricked one of the subwoofer amp modules. It is still working as a crossover though and the sound is pretty good even with just one sub. Replacement part should be here in a few days. 8
